Thanks for the memories. I remember those several days in which we worked our way into the union league club down on van buren where the gop state central committee was meeting to select a replacement for Jack Ryan. What a collection of misfits; from general borling (who serenaded us on the piano in the waiting room), to ice cream magnate jim oberweis, and to some one-armed farmer from western illinois (an obvious victim of the combine).
I remember on the last day some female african american (whose name cannot recall) was smuggled in up the back freight elevator --- she was predicted to become our new messiah. Shortly thereafter they totally closed the meeting and began ushering us out. I remember chicagolady kept screeching she was being ejected for being hispanic.
We gathered on the sidewalk outdoors to continue our protest and trying to capture as much press attention as possible. I remember several of us talking with kass at some length.
Oh, happy days!!!
Who should have received that nomination? Since Peter Fitzgerald was a state senator, I think the nominee should have been a state senator. Steve Rauschenberger ran, in that primary, so he would have been a good choice. He’s not as conservative as I am, but he would have done better than Keyes did.
