NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Following more than a week of protests over the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minnesota, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday a series of police reforms in New York City.

The reforms come at the suggestion of the mayor’s task force on racial inclusion, which is co-chaired by first lady Chirlane McCray.

De Blasio said the city will be moving funding from the NYPD to youth initiatives and social services.

“The details will be worked out in the budget process in the weeks ahead. But I want people to understand that we are committed to shifting resources to ensure that the focus is on our young people,” de Blasio said.

The mayor said that any decision about funding must also ensure the safety of New Yorkers.

Escape from New York looks more credible every day. How much flight Can the city sustain Before it becomes non-functional and irrelevant?

By all means, community policing. Each cell block, er, each neighborhood can have their own capos who in turn run the local snitches.

We can have the Stasi and KGB all rolled into a nice little system of informants.

Enlist the children! Nothing says totalitarian like children ratting on their parents.

All in good party behavior though.

I can honestly say I have been affected by None of de blasio’s disastrous policies. or his time in office.

He is a NIGHTMARE but I guess Staten Island really is an island unto itself and we’re doing fine.

I work on staten island now instead of manhattan so that makes a world of difference.

But I make manhattan money so I live nice.

I will be fighting to help turn our district seat back to R, which it was forever.

Perhaps not running a convicted felon will help this time around.

Bernard B. Kerik @BernardKerik

This is exactly what Mayor David Dinkins did in the 90s which resulted in the highest violent crime and murder rates in the history of the USA. Social services and youth programs don’t go too well when they’re ducking and weaving gun fire.

Defunding the police will result in higher violent crime and murder rates, and cause poverty, lower real estate values, lower economic income, and higher welfare roles. No one wants to live, work, visit, or go to school in a war zone.

Get rid of cops and start the meat wagons to pick up drug addicts and murder victims. I suppose they will have opium dens with clean needles and “safe drugs” also.

As an urban school teacher, I was involved in one of those programs years ago. It was amazing - but not surprising - how much of the program’s money just simply disappeared.

Example: A good amount of money was used to buy community bicycles. It was supposed to be a sharing kind of thing. Turned out to be more of a stealing kind of thing. No one cared.
