We think of slavery as a practice of the past, an image from Roman colonies or 18th-century American plantations, but the practice of enslaving human beings as property still exists. There are 29.8 million people living as slaves right now, according to a comprehensive new report issued by the Australia-based Walk Free Foundation...

RE: The article defines it as prostitution

Aren’t prostitutes free to leave their pimps? Heck, they can even do freelance if they’re good and keep all the earnings.

The WAPO has to have pulled this stat out of their rectal zone. How do they claim to have come up with this figure? How do they define “slave”? Where are these slaves located? What brand of people hold them? If they “know” all this enough to put a number to it, what are they doing about it? Will disbanding the police help?

Pretty much every married male considers himself a slave of his wife and vice versa. We probably have 200 million slaves in the United States alone.

Also, I'm a slave to Emmylou Harris so make that 200,000,001.

I don’t care

For Gods sake

Quit trying to explain how we’re not racist really

Eff all that people

We’re way down the road from that weakness

And a GD weakness is all it ever was

Look at damned George Bush

What a race cuck

Do Freepers want to be like that

Give blacks respect they earn

And disrespect they merit

And quit treating them like spoiled brats

They also claim illegal aliens who came into this country live like slaves because their employers threaten to turn them in to the police if they don't keep working.

I agree with this definition. Illegal immigrants working for pennies on the dollar and paying out to the “company store” is a modern interpretation of slavery.

Slavery hasn’t gone away in the US. We’ve just gotten more creative in how we apply it.

I recall seeing a ‘commercial’ or PSA that gave a phone number or website to have someone investigated regarding this.
Shocked me..

A little fuzzy memory but it was service type establishments like hair or nail salons or maybe massage parlors/spas where the money and everything, including tip, was to be coordinated by someone other than who did the work/service..

I can absolutely see how some people get smuggled in here by people and forced to work to send money back home and they don’t see a dime of it first.
Living in cramped quarters and don’t dare say anything because they have you and your family back home in a vice...

Slavery in a sense. And it was an American PSA/commercial.
Again,a little fuzzy about the details but I recall seeing it on TV somewhere in my US travels..

Not sure about 60,000 but in a population of 350 million- yeah. I could see small family businesses using people of the same country as slaves under the guise of ‘employer/employee’ or brother/sister..

The govt would be the only ones that would be able to investigate because again, the owner of said person would be like a pimp. Control their food,lodging,clothing..

Hey, I’m a slave to a beautiful woman, my wife.
Wonderful, if you can find happiness in my kind of slavery.

I don’t demean the evils of actual slavery. Owning another human being is a sin.

The Mexican and Central American gangs use slaves for sex trafficking. Especially children. 60k sounds like a reasonable estimate. When they find them, it’s usually about 80-100 under a gang’s control. Most tend to get released when they’re 24-25 after 10-14 years of slavery.

It’s alright, their clients are mostly illegals as well.

Saudi Arabia has virtually no slaves?

Slavery was outlawed there on in 1968. No slavery there now. God saw fit to give those poor Bedouins land sitting on top of what the West NEEDS: petroleum and natural gas.
Some of the foreign companies in there bring in their own people who sign two-year commitments to work there. They have to have an EXIT visa as well for their vacation every two years. So, whoever DOES decide to work there has to be very committed.
People from third worlds go there because their families NEED the money.

The Kingdom has SO much money a ton of jobs and foreigners must jump through a BUNCH of hoops just to get into the country. It's still a closed country and the visas to get in are not easy to get.
Back in the mid-late 1980's the King was making a billion US dollars every day and a half. The money is mind-boggling.

There are 1. business visas and there are 2. worker visas.
3. The visitors' visas are given at Hajj when Muslims may enter from all over the world. It's a different date every year because the Saudis use the LUNAR calendar for these strictly Muslim events.
A Hajji must have the "ISLAM" on his passport to partake in this event.

Non-Muslims may not go. Our American group, from Saudi ARAMCO, could go up into the mountains during this time to a town called Ta'if. We could SEE the Kabah and the zillions of Muslims below. They ALL wear this perfectly white cover-all from head to foot so they all look alike.

No slavery. The King owns all the petroleum and natural gas and he has more money than God. He gives money to all kinds of poor countries, even if they aren't Muslim.

The Kingdom has another 200 years more of petroleum and natural gas THEN they will have nothing. They've been sending their young people to universities in Europe and the USA so they will have an educated population that can be of a benefit to the country.

The tourist ships that land in the Red Sea ports allow those tourists to visit the Kingdom just for the days they are in port. NONE of them want to get left behind.

“From the article: “Not all sex workers or “prostitutes” are slaves, of course; plenty have chosen the work voluntarily and can leave it freely. But...many are coerced into participating at a young age and gradually shifted into a life that very much resembles slavery.”

So, WaPo hasn’t actually counted the number of prostitutes in the US, has no idea how many are voluntary or coerced, yet feels confident in estimating that there are 60,000 slaves in the US.
And I believe the math was funky: 60,000 = 1 in every 50,000 Americans is a slave?
They’re really trying to gin up more riots.

And most of them are working as slaves in Hollywood and New York.

Ever see the movie Babel? Brad Pitt film, intended to generate sympathy for the illegal alien character who works as babysitter for the Brad character. But the effect on audiences was the opposite of sympathy.
It’s worth seeing, though. Inadvertently tells the truth.

These numbers are probably reasonably accurate or at least proportional to the real numbers. This is why democrats are so desperate for power - they need to make the West more like the rest of the world.

” 60,000 in the US today ????? Ooooookaaaay ...”

Human trafficking is a big deal in the US, lots of Young girls are smuggled into the US and pimped by their “masters” First time I saw this was in LasVegas, right on the busy sidewalk in front of Bellagio, Mexican guys, barely able to speak English with matching T-shirts emblazoned with “YOUNG GIRL IN YOUR ROOM TONIGHT!” Followed by a 1-800 number. It wasn’t an offer to send a girl up to vacuum the floor.

I wonder if that figure counts the thousands of underaged girls who are sold into the sex trade.
