Marx and Engels sure came up with a nonsense substitute word for “workers”; the root of “proletarian” is Latin “proles”, which literally means a reproducer/baby-maker and has no connotations with work or labor.
They also invented the term “lumpen-proletariat” to mean worthless drones with no employment and no prospects, who are always aligned with the ruling class. In other words, these guys.
