Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted each said Thursday that they will return 4 percent of their respective government salaries to the state to match similar pay cuts DeWine has ordered for thousands of other state employees.
DeWine, who earned $140,989.84 as governor last year, said during a news conference that his legal counsel has told him he cant take a pay cut directly. Instead, he said, he will write a check equal to 4 percent of his salary which came to $5,640 in 2019.
In addition, the governor said he and First Lady Fran DeWine have decided that, going forward, he will donate half of his monthly gubernatorial salary to charity. DeWine -- a Greene County Republican who is independently wealthy -- didnt specify which charity or charities he is giving the money to, and a gubernatorial spokesman didnt immediately respond to a request for that information.
Husted, a Columbus-area Republican, said he signed paperwork Thursday morning to deduct 4 percent from his salary of $176,426 per year -- all of which comes from his post as director of InnovateOhio, as Husted foregoes the lieutenant governors usual $113,947 salary. Four percent of $176,426 is equal to about $7,057.
Were aligned with what were asking everybody else to do, Husted said.
