The more redneck contingent of my family still lives in Alabama and they all follow NASCAR. My dad wears a belt with the confederate battle flag on it. The confederate flag does not necessarily stand for the Old South. It just stands for the south, period. Southerners are proud of not being yankees. Last time I was out there I saw the occasional rebel flag on people's houses.
NASCAR is largely a southern thing. I hope they crash and burn over this (I have never been a fan).

I am frequently in the counties of central PA and I can confirm that it’s commonplace to see the rebel flag proudly flying. I presume it’s flying to express strong support for our 1st Amendment rights, and that’s why it pleases me to see it.
