Texas' Hispanic population on pace to be largest share of state by 2021

Texas’ Hispanic population has grown by more than 2 million since 2010, according to new population estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, and the state's demographer now predicts that Hispanics will be the state's largest population group by mid-2021.

An annual gain of 201,675 between July 2018 and July 2019 pushed the count of Hispanic residents to more than 11.5 million, the census estimates show. Although annual growth has slowed slightly in recent years, the new figures put a sharp point on how quickly the Hispanic population continues to climb. The annual growth in Hispanic residents has outpaced the combined growth among white, Black and Asian residents every year since 2010.

I’d read GWB did even better than that when he won re-election as governor in 1998, getting about half of Hispanic voters. And the exit polling from 2004 famously had GWB getting 44% of the national Hispanic vote and a majority (I think) of Hispanics in Texas. But I also read that both of those numbers were very questionable. The 2004 exit poll in particular was picked apart by analysts from both the Right and Left, who concluded he probably got about 40% nationally. Whatever the case, GWB probably did better than average with Hispanics in Texas. I’d argue his outreach crossed over into pandering, but it was somewhat effective.

Other Republicans have apparently done well too. Exit polls showed Senator Cornyn getting 49% of Hispanics in 2014. All credit to him, but that was a good year for Republicans and the Democrats put up barely token opposition in that race. I bet Cornyn doesn’t come close to that mark this year.

There have been other races where Republicans were said to have gotten 40% or a little more of Texas Hispanics, but 40% still equals about a 20 point loss with that group. Going forward that relatively good showing will get swamped by the absolute increase in Hispanic votes.

I agree that Hispanics should not be written off. Nor should blacks or Asians. Nor should whites (getting only about 60% of whites nationally is not good considering the explicitly anti-white policies pushed by Democrats). Republicans should have undone the 1965 and 1990 Immigration Acts when they had the chance, thus preventing a demographic shift that was always going to favor the Left, but they didn’t and here we are.

I’m all for outreach. I think the GOP can do better on that front, but I just think it’s a tough climb, whether we have a messenger like Trump or someone like GWB. Polls show that Hispanics and Asians, the two biggest immigrant communities, hold left of center views on most issues. So even if we took the GWB/Wall Street Journal approach and tried to remove the immigration issue by going left on immigration, and somehow succeeded, we’d still be at a disadvantage.

The riots and anarchist screaming is NOT winning any votes for the democrats here-no matter what their color or ethnicity-I’m Hispanic ancestry, living in a rural area that is evenly divided Hispanic/anglo with some Black people, and even a few Chinese and Indians-the only liberals-maybe 6-8 of them are Anglo and wealthier than all of us others-not Hispanic, Black, etc-hope it is the same in the cities-country people have no use for democrats and their destructive policies...

And yes it’s true that in the past the GOP has done a poor job of reaching out to Hispanics, but the pandering Bush approach isn’t the answer neither.

I’m Caucasian and Hispanic-most Hispanics are Caucasian-some are Black and a few are Asian-and we don’t go into any “bucket” but the one that says “American”-Hispanic is an ethnic group, not a race...

I don’t know any liberal Hispanics, either-country people are 95% conservative-never mind what “color” they are...

Please-most Hispanics are CAUCASIAN-I’m one, so are all my family and about 50% of my neighbors-Hispanic is an ethnic group-not a race-if they are a race, then so are Germans, Italians, Irish etc...

Fake news from ABC?
You bet!
1.Hispanic is not even s race. It's made up of all kinds of races. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are Hispanics and they are White.
2. A big percentage of Hispanics are White.
3. Texas is quite a bit different from other states. They were part of Mexico then fought the Mexicans and became a Republic before becoming a state. Hispanics in Texas (especially these that have been there for centuries) are not necessarily going to vote Democratic.
Of course the massive influx of illegals over the past decades has probably titled the overall Hispanic vote to the Dems but it's still not as automatic as they imply.

Depends on what they associate with. Hispanic is a cultural term not a racial one, so you have whiteBlack, mestizo, Indian, east asian, mixed etc Hispanic people

They want to go further. 100% black police force, 100% black local politicians, no more gentrification allowed.

That's easy.
Haiti, The Congo, Nigeria etc say “Hello”.
Every single black plurality big city in America is a crime ridden hell hole. Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago you name it.
I am all for allowing blacks to have their own little enclave with 100% black population and black everything.
Trouble is, all the blacks will flee the joint in next to no time.

Country people don’t like to be pandered to-by anyone, no matter what our ethnic group is-cities are another matter-even the burbs are infested with cockroaches who want freebies-I hope the working people get tired of it soon...

Yeah, and the illegals will push Texas over to the Dims before the 20s are out, along with Arizona, Florida, maybe even Louisiana.

Not if Trump continues building the wall at this rate. Cut off the flow of illegals, halt the influx of “refugees”(check yesterday's Executive Order) step up deportations and it all changes.

‘Moreover, their vast suburbs have a history of voting Republican.’

you’ve painted yourself into a corner by invoking ‘never’...if history teaches anything, it is that change prevails over stasis...

The “Hispanics are conservative” self-delusion is comforting I’m sure. Unfortunately reality begs to differ. Where Hispanics vote in large enough numbers, conservatism dies and the Left gains power, Permanently. Slight tweaks to this formula, because some Hispanics are less liberal than others, are just that, tweaks and marginal differences. The major trend is still true. Hispanic voting = Democrat victories.

So sadly, Texas will soon be “Tejas” and will join politically dead states CA, NM, CO, VA and NV in the Electoral College graveyard.

And then, Hispanic population growth will have done what no civil or world war could do to liberty in the USA, namely end it in favor of one-party rule.

I heard the same things from the media in 2016. And Trump still won.
I doubt if Hispanics are going to sit down quietly and allow themselves to be turned into second class citizens and chattels by Black Lives Matter.
They have read the Black Lives Matter manifesto too. It’s on the BLM web site. You are going to get a big surprise in November when Trump wins and wins big.

Chuckle.
Outside of Venezuela and maybe Nicaragua and Cuba (all of whom are near economic collapse), how many Spanish speaking countries have one party rule? Is Spain itself one party rule? Nope.
You are assuming Hispanics are monolithic and universally stupid. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“It demographics, plain and simple.”

Yes.

And the “white vote” is no longer monolithic; Boomers (shrinking white demographic) trend R, but Xers and Millennials (growing whote demographic) trend D.

Hispanics may be largely socially conservative (many are Catholic), but politically — they love handout$.

Formerly conservative universities were infested/infected by (other) university-indoctrinated progressive staff. As were our newsrooms and corporations.

Trump got a higher percentage of the White vote than McCain or Romney. And thanks to BLM and their rabid hatred of Whites, Trump will get an even higher percentage of the White vote this year.
