E-Verify has probably been the biggest letdown with Trump. Someone convinced him that the economy would die if we had it, and certainly DOES NOT have to be the case. If we really want immigrants to do the hard, physical, work, they could come as LEGAL guest workers, providing, of course, they leave their families behind and go home after their stint.
That’s how it’s done everywhere in the world, except here and Western Europe.
Guest worker programs don’t work here and in Europe for several reasons:
1. The guest workers don’t go home. They overstay their visas and disappear.
2. The regulations covering legal guest workers require employers to pay prevailing wages. Other restrictions on employers discourage using legal guest workers.
3. The seemingly inexhaustible supply of illegal cheap labor incentivizes the hiring of illegals.
4. There is no shortage of workers in the US.
5. Birthright citizenship, welfare benefits, free healthcare, etc. must be changed if you have even a limited guest worker program.
