US higher education is soon to experience a brutal demographic and financial environment. Despite a good reputation for academics and congenial student life, W&L is endangered because of its small endowment and geographic isolation in the lower Shenandoah Valley. Changing the name of Washington and Lee University would be stupid and self-destructive because it would sever it from a storied history and alienate its alumni base.

I suspect a poll of the Alumni would find a vast majority in favor of keeping the name as it is. And hopefully the donors will vote no with their dollars.
