The only way for fully automated cars to work safely is when ALL cars are self-driving. All following preprogrammed rules. No self-driving vehicle is safe to operate in a mixed environment where human unpredictability is a factor.
So true. There is a lot of construction activity on main roads near my home. Barriers and orange traffic cones everywhere. Three lanes quickly reducing to one via orange cones. Then there is the road worker with a "Slow" and "Stop" sign in his hand stepping between the cones and stopping traffic in your lane, or motioning you to continue even though the signal light is lit up red. No way a self-driving vehicle can figure this out. Then there are the idiots who try to speed up around you to cut in front of you from an improper lane - had a guy try that a couple days ago but I was faster and he almost collided with a concrete barrier when he had to slam on the brakes - ha!
