JERUSALEM—Israel’s unchecked resurgence of COVID-19 was propelled by the abrupt May 17 decision to reopen all schools, medical and public-health officials have told The Daily Beast.
The assessment of Israel’s trajectory has direct bearing on the heated debate underway in the United States between President Donald Trump, who is demanding a nationwide reopening of schools for what appear to be largely political reasons, and health authorities who caution it could put the wider population at risk.
Importantly, on May 17 in Israel it appeared the virus not only was under control, but defeated. Israel reported only 10 new cases of COVID-19 in the entire country that day. In the U.S., the debate often is about reopening schools where the disease is not only not in decline, but surging.
On Sunday, for instance, U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, “There’s nothing in the data that suggests that kids being in school is in any way dangerous.” But that is not the case in Israel, where the data from June, the last month for which there is a full set of statistics, appear all too clear.

If I remember correctly, didn’t places like Denmark and even Germany open schools and not have a sudden upward tick in the number of cases?

True. You show me 10 experts advocating for the schools to be closed, and I’ll show you 10 more who argue that they should be open.
Also, how do we define “dangerous”? Kids being positive? Teachers being positive? Where’s the fatality stats?

Anecdotal evidence can get you any result you want. How many K-12 children worldwide have gotten sick from this, and how many have died from it? How many children have gotten Covid and then passed it to their parents?
I’m holding out for a better treatment/vaccine. Got high blood pressure, type A blood, vitamin D deficiency, 67 yo,brother who is a transplant patient and a sister who a two year survivor of cancer.
Not everyone is going to get this. Herd immunity should be around 60-70% of the population. We can reach herd immunity either through that many people getting infected (which would mean many, many more deaths than we already have had) or we can skip to herd immunity with a vaccine. President Trump says we’re very close and there are multiple vaccine candidates in phase 3 or going into phase 3 trials right now.
Schools should open not because we want people to get this (we don’t, and we should be taking simple steps to reduce the spread and protect the vulnerable), but because the damage done to kids who don’t receive a good education is too high and the economic damage of parents having to scramble for daycare for kids not in school is also too high. We should absolutely open our schools AND do our best to isolate the sick and slow the spread until a vaccine becomes available. That approach saves many lives without tanking the economy or hurting kids.
Well of course The Daily Beast had to search for a report that comported to their bias.
The Israeli fearmongers no doubt share the Democrats’ absurd definition of a “case” of the virus — you can be sick with no symptoms, and everyone in your family is automatically counted as a case even if the others have not tested positive using that phony test.
It is a question as to when,not if.
Which is what these lock downs were supposed to be about.
Somehow, the goal drifted until it was: no body should get COVID-19.
