Four of the nation's former top health officials took an extraordinary step Tuesday to combat the Trump administration's efforts to disregard and politicize guidelines from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, speaking out in a scathing Washington Post op-ed.
The four former CDC directors warned against what they called a "tragic indictment" of the CDC's efforts as President Donald Trump and top coronavirus task force officials seek to reopen the nation's schools amid the raging pandemic. Trump has said he will "pressure" governors to reopen schools.
"Unfortunately, their sound science is being challenged with partisan potshots, sowing confusion and mistrust at a time when the American people need leadership, expertise and clarity. These efforts have even fueled a backlash against public health officials across the country: Public servants have been harassed, threatened and forced to resign when we need them most. This is unconscionable and dangerous," they wrote.
Public health experts, they said: "Face two opponents: covid-19, but also political leaders and others attempting to undermine" the CDC. The op-ed's authors, Drs. Tom Frieden, Jeffrey Koplan, David Satcher and Richard Besser, served in both Republican and Democratic administrations for a combined 15 years.
"We cannot recall over our collective tenure a single time when political pressure led to a change in the interpretation of scientific evidence," the wrote. White House spokesman Judd Deere called the CDC the nation's "trusted health protection agency" and praised its work throughout the pandemic.
"The White House and CDC have been working together in partnership since the very beginning of this pandemic to carry out the President's highest priority: the health and safety of the American public.," he said in a statement.

The CDC stopped counting H1N1 deaths and cases in before 2009 even ended and estimated the numbers all the way into 2010. They stopped looking altogether now that they just call H1N1 “flu”.
When things reach “pandemic” level things like contact tracing and restricting movement have little effect in stopping transmission. This has ALWAYS been the position of the CDC and WHO in the past. But this time “it’s different”.
And they have the blood of thousands of suicide victims on their hands.

If Australia has only dozens of people in hospital and in intensive care across the country due to coronavirus, “how the hell is this a pandemic” says Sky News host Alan Jones.
Mr Jones said there are “things government won’t tell” the Australia public on the issue of COVID-19.
“The one story we are not being told is what damage has been done and is being done by the fear-mongering of political leaders, whose first instinct is to frighten us,” he said.
“The second instinct is to exercise complete control over us, via shutdowns or lockdowns”.
He said political leaders only listen to the experts “which suit them” and not the others who warned of the implications of the social, economic and public health consequences of widespread lockdowns.
“Politicians are too arrogant to listen”.
Mr Jones spoke of the widespread economic ramifications of the government-imposed coronavirus lockdowns with the Australian’s economic editor Adam Creighton.
Mr Creighton said the “reality is this disease is far, far less dangerous than was first thought”.
“But ministers are not saying that”.
He also said elements of the media have not reported the deaths and cases “in context” which has subsequently “scared the daylights out of people”.
