My understanding is that the Bantus were colonizing non-Bantu areas of Africa long before the Europeans got there.

That is an excellent poInt. When the European powers colonized Africa, they drew up national boundaries with no regard to tribal boundaries. That is the source of much of the misfortune in Africa today.

It would be as if in the 1800s Germany, Poland, and Hungary had been forced into one country. German officials would be favoring German citizens at the expense of the Poles and Hungarians. Etc. There would be lots of “tribal” cronyism.

It would be difficult to form a working country under those conditions.
