Bye, boomer: the coming cull of workers over 50
Marketwatch ^ | July 30 2020 | By Brett Arends

Uh-oh. Those of us who remember when ’80s music was new had better start bracing ourselves for those big-box-store greeter jobs earlier than we expected.

It doesn’t take a genius to see that the jobs market is probably heading for a massive, rolling shakeout. And that means plenty of employers may be using the cover of COVID-19 to get rid of lots of expensive older workers.

Age discrimination in the jobs market, which is supposedly illegal, goes up in recessions. Some employers take the opportunity to ax experienced workers who are paid a reasonable wage, and replace them with cheap, desperate kids who will put up with anything.

Not the first time

Silicon Balley has dumped over 40s for years. Always ends up in a class action law suit

Fortunately for me my skill set prevented them from dumping me....until I hit 63

“Boomers were not in charge in the sixties when it all started to go to hell. The “greatest generation” was in charge, and even the parents of the greatest generation.”

Don’t bother, some of the young know that blame is everything.

Otherwise one must take responsibility for one’s own success or failure.

Unmotivated, lazy and quite honestly stupid.

Really true. I retired in 2017. A handful of young ones are great and can't help their generation any more than we could when the Who declared it for us.

Big point I learned from an Anthony Robbins talk (on CD):

They have confidence without competence.

Most young folks I run into are dumb as dirt. No social or speaking skills. Wouldn't know which end of the shovel to use. Can't say a sentence without "Like" being every third word. Have a hard time spelling three letter words. Know nothing about American history of civics. If they can't make it out there in the work world then it must be my fault.

Yep, every dollar you save in your 20s is huge. I wish I had realized that then.

It has been going on for a long time. My dad worked for a major oil company from 1958 to 1990. Put up with a lot of crap, but stayed loyal to the company. They “retired” him at 55.

I never bought into the age discrimination thing. Either you have value to a business or you don't.

1000 %.

They told me three months ago I was “essential”.

They told me three days ago I was laid-off end of August.

If your over 55, temp work, contract work or self employment are your options.

No one is going to hire you for a regular job because they don’t want to pay for your health care or other benefits and they also figure because of your age you’re not going be around very long anyway.

When I hear the term "Essential Worker", I think of "Schindler's List."

I was essential until about six months ago when they started trying to get rid of older workers at least I’ve got the Union to back me up till I leave in about 6 months

For a good article on this read “ betrayed by work”.
Oh they love me when I was working hard and getting stuff done and just being really essential and really special for Year’s but not now. Now management is into saving their butts you know protect The Rice Bowl.
Time to go you essential wonder worker hahaha

Thank you.

My son has been through a lot in his life. His mom did the hard work. I just have to keep him in line. :)

That’s funny. I remember when I started college in the mid 80’s folks then were saying COBOL was on it’s way out. Thirty five years later it apparently is still chugging.
