Investor Immigrants Will Stimulate the Economy
Townhall.com ^ | August 11, 2020 | Stephen Moore

One way President Donald Trump built the best economy in 30 years was by attracting nearly $1 trillion of foreign capital to these shores. This money got invested in new business startups and expanded existing Made-in-America businesses. This "repatriation tax holiday" worked like a charm. Millions of jobs were created -- and this was a major contributing factor to the American economic sonic boom.

Now, we've been flattened by a pandemic, and the rebuilding job is underway. We need another infusion of investment capital into the U.S. -- and quickly -- to get the 25 million jobs back that were lost when businesses went under.

There's an easy way to grease the skids of this early-stage recovery -- and unlike all the other multitrillion proposals that Nancy Pelosi is flouting, which would send our national debt into the stratosphere, this plan costs taxpayers ZERO dollars. It actually reduces the budget deficit.

I am speaking of creating a new investment and job creation visa program. This would give a visa to up to 100,000 foreigners each year who invest $500,000 or more in an American business or a new enterprise. The investment must create a minimum of five to 10 jobs for Americans.

In the early 1990s, the feds set up the EB-5 program that created tens of thousands of jobs and brought in tens of billions in capital. But the program also was criticized for a handful of widely publicized cases of fraud. These were rare but cast a shadow over the program.

But many countries like Canada and Germany have such programs, and they have successfully attracted high-caliber and valuable immigrant talent. If they can't come to the U.S., then the money will flow to our competitor nations.

The theme of this program is that immigrants who benefit Americans are huge assets. We know that many of the foreign nationals who will participate in the program will be proven successful business operators. Most immigrants are entrepreneurial and risk-takers by their very nature.

We also know from experience that these newcomers who come with money typically buy homes and spend money on everything from food to cars to education to entertainment to cell phones, computers and medical products. It is not unusual for these successful immigrants from all parts of the world to double or even triple their initial investment through their spending and further investments.

Why not adopt a program of 50,000 to 100,000 investor immigrant visas per year. This would attract $50 billion to $100 billion in investment capital yearly to these shores. There might be an extra incentive if the investment is made in poor areas, where jobs and capital is scarce.

The Trump administration has been skeptical of this type of program, but it fits with the president's desire to shift to a merit-based immigrant system. These immigrants create jobs for Americans; they don't take them.

Think of the impact on America's economic future from admitting each year just one or two more amazing immigrant success stories like Andrew Grove, from Hungary and founder of Intel, or Russian-born Sergey Brin, founder of the $1 trillion American company Google. They are out there waiting to come to the United States and prosper. Let them come.

Many Western countries (and Third World countries) have plans like that.The one problem I have with *our* plan is that it should *never* lead to citizenship.A Green Card would be OK for a man/woman of character...but never citizenship.

I think there are many who would invest big $$$ here in order to get a Green Card.The only way a Green Card can be revoked is for misconduct.

Maybe, with probation periods of mandatory surveillance against racketeering.

Here is a proposal. Summarily deport anyone, citizens included, who promote any form of displacing American workers and American investment with foreigners who are not vested in the best interests of our nation. End H1B and give all business 3 months to resolve the labor issues. Fine businesses that outsource and ban them from doing business within the borders of our nation, and arrest anyone who can be proven to have diminished American salaries by bringing lower wage foreign workers. How about them apples?

“ One way President Donald Trump built the best economy in 30 years was by attracting nearly $1 trillion of foreign capital to these shores. ”

Not entirely accurate. That “foreign capital” was when we removed the tax pain and permitted US companies to bring foreign profits back to the US.

I do not like the idea of letting in hoards of Chinese communists in for a fee.

Your advice on that matter is better than the advice of the writer of the piece above this thread. I’ve seen the corruption brought by foreigners with money along with their children and grandchildren, when they saturated an area within the U.S. It wasn’t pretty, and they don’t like Americans.

First end chain migration, then maybe it’d be worth considering.

...with a rusty, red-hot railroad spike.

AND the donkey he rode in on.

Expel all H1-Bs and foreign students.

You spelled “execute” wrong, didn’t you?

With the exception of temporary visas for cute Eastern European chicks working waitress jobs at tourist sites, while they improve their English before going back home.

This should be part of a Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement bill, missing since 1986 ONE TIME amnesty. Since that amnesty was granted already, a second amnesty is off the table. What remains is the enforcement the Democrats have disallowed since then.

The List of Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, missing since 1986 goes like this -
1) southern barrier;
2) require eVerify to hire;
3) end all chain migration;
4) birthright per Minor v. Happersett (plural parents);
5) end work visas;
6) 10-year moratorium on all new applications for citizenship (40 years to allow workplace automation effects on downsizing population);
7) Set up an illegal aliens’ victim restitution fund.

Enactment of these provisions will motivate illegal aliens to SELF-deport, and remove colonizadors from our welfare rolls.

We need to pass these protections in order not to make out Democrats as liars who promised the protection in exchange for a ONE TIME AMNESTY. The Democrats got the amnesty already. Now its past time for the protections we were promised.

Funny, even Canada has better protection from foreign workers than the US. Try to work there, even on a temporary basis. You are treated like a criminal trespasser.

Good luck. There wouldn’t be 10 votes in the House or Senate for that plan.

Green Cards are a joke. Everyone over stays the thing and makes themselves scarce and gets lost in America. I’m fed the f**k up to my eye teeth with the levels of people pouring in here. Everyone hates us but God Almighty do they all want to get here.

Amen! To that. I work in a hospital in southern NJ and the staff in the place is filled with every jabbering mutt from every Third World craphole on Earth.

They bring themselves, their families, aunts, uncles grandparents and the sacred family cow. And the elderly among them are automatically put on Social Security.
