What is George Will's Problem?
American Thinker.com ^ | August 13, 2020 | Gene Comiskey

In reading George Will’s recent column (“The Difference between Trumpism and fascism”), I was struck by a few things: his elitist anti-Trump tone, his denigration of the President’s supporters and his lack of understanding of Donald Trump’s appeal. The thing which struck me most, however, was not a failure to know the past, but his inability to apply the lessons of history to the present. He recites the basics of the history of fascism while completely missing how that history applies to the current situation.

What is it about Donald Trump that so offends George Will? Does the President fail Will’s ideological purity test? Is it the tweeting? Is it that most of Donald Trump’s supporters probably never subscribed to National Review? Or is it something as petty as the recognition that most of the President’s supporters are not members of the elites? They don’t belong to the country clubs that so-called Republicans like George Will belong to, and probably prefer it that way.

It is interesting that in his recitation of the history of fascism, Mr. Will fails to see the obvious: that the historical circumstances that shaped it and the ideological theories which Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and others believed in, apply not to Donald Trump and his followers but to the very people who are trying to defeat the President and lead this country down a destructive path of rigid intellectual, economic, and social control.

One difference between the 20th century fascists and that of today is that the left has bypassed the brownshirt phase and gone straight to black. You don’t see Trump supporters attacking the police. You don’t see them burning down precinct houses or churches.

Absolutely correct. A doctor friend asked me 40 years ago what I thought of George Will, way back when he was thought ultra-conservative. I said, he’s really a liberal. And too liberal for me.

Georgie should read up on what happened to intellectuals when the Communists took over in Russia. They were sent to the gulags, never to be heard from again.

The answer is simple: George Will is a petty man. He’s used to being able to comment on others without having to actually DO anything responsible to improve the country. He’s a talker....not a doer.

In recent years, I’m sure that George has gotten an earful from people like those who post on this message board. They used to respect him, but now find him to be no better than a bitter, pathetic man with very little intellectual ammo left.

He's a phony and always has been. His pose as a "conservative" is the same as all the RINOs who act conservative during election time but are basically republicrats the rest of the year. Will merely played the role of pompous/erudite Buckley wannabe commentator.

His problem with Trump is that Trump is an outsider who actually want to get things done rather than act a part in a Kabuki play.

Fascism is socialism de facto. Fascists are the destroyers of natural rights, freedom, limited government, and sovereignty of the people. Trump is the destroyer of the destroyers.

He thinks he’s smarter than everyone else so when we rejected his worldview, the only emotional play he had left was to diminish those that rejected his way of thinking.

This is punctuated by President Trump’s successes and there being no notable popular desire to return to Will’s way of doing things.

He fancies himself an intellectual but his whole posture is deeply emotional. We hurt his feelings and he wants us to know who’s boss.

His problem? 40 years living in Washington. You don’t do that unless you like big government.

**************

Yep, by now he has permanent membership in the DC Club.

He’s an entrenched swamp denizen just like the rest the corrupt DC inhabitants. He probably hasn’t put one foot outside the Beltway in the last 30 years.

George Will starting digging this hole when he joined the ABC News show and hasn’t stopped in all those years.
