By Aug. 14, Yangtze River Basins monsoon season had lasted 64 days, the longest in the past 60 years, according to Chinese meteorological authorities.
The fourth flood peak of the Yangtze River is expected to arrive at the Three Gorges Dam in the morning of Aug.15, as torrential rains have ravaged the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in Sichuan Province since Aug. 10. Many cities in the province are inundated. In the worst-hit area, water has risen to the second floor.
So far, about 100,000 residents have been affected by flooding in 14 rivers across the province.

If that dam goes, it’s gonna affect the whole world, bigly.
May they live in interesting times.
RE: If that dam goes, its gonna affect the whole world, bigly.
Despite many FReepers wishing it were so, I believe the Dam has been engineered to withstand this kind of flooding.
Well, it is rock solid Chinese engineering.
So we have that.
According to a source in the USACE, the damn is not in trouble.
But they have high hopes....................
For a place with 81 million residents, its not a lot.
I suspect you are right.
All depends on how you define failure in an engineering design.
I usual define it as the design is not functioning as it was designed.
For instance, an engine may still run but burn lots of oil = failure
The dam has already moved and has major cracks.
High Hopes

Next time your found
With your chin on the ground
There a lot to be learned
So look around
Just what makes that little old ant
Think he’ll move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, can’t
Move a rubber tree plant
But he’s got high hopes
He’s got high hopes
He’s got high apple pie
In the sky hopes
So any time your gettin’ low
‘Stead of lettin’ go
Just remember that ant
Oops, there goes another rubber tree plant
Oops, there goes another rubber tree plant
Oops, there goes another rubber tree plant
When troubles call
And your back’s to the wall
There a lot to be learned
That wall could fall
Once there was a silly old ram
Thought he’d punch a hole in a dam
No one could make that ram, scram
He kept buttin’ that dam
‘Cause he had high hopes
He had high hopes
He had high apple pie
In the sky hopes
So any time your feelin’ bad
‘Stead of feelin’ sad
Just remember that ram
Oops, there goes a billion kilowatt dam
Oops, there goes a billion kilowatt dam
Oops, there goes a billion kilowatt dam
All problems just a toy balloon
They’ll be bursted soon
They’re just bound to go pop
Oops, there goes another problem kerplop
Oops, there goes another problem kerplop
Oops, there goes another problem kerplop, kerplop
It would be so good for the world. It would humiliate China in ways we cannot even understand. It could even collapse their government.
There is an inscription at the bottom of the dam that reads: “Imported from Walmart”
That may be true, but did the construction companies paying the big kick-backs for the business build it to specifications?
Even if it doesn’t go, it has probably been stressed
beyond limits, another flood, another time may see it go.
Sounds like the Chinese build dams like the Soviets built nuclear power plants.
What’s a million Chinese?
Well, we all know how accurate information coming out of Communist China is....
The TGD collapse would irrevocably cement the idea that the CCP had lost the Mandate of Heaven.
