U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- On 29 July, 2020, Daniel Schilling went to clear trail about a mile from his cabin in Alaska. His dog returned home without him. His wife was very concerned. Searchers found his body, killed by a bear, where he was working. An empty can of bear spray, with the safety off, which had been discharged at the site, was also found.
August 6, 2020 (Anchorage) Employees of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) responded to the location of a fatal bear attack that occurred Wednesday, July 29, near the community of Hope, to collect samples and gather information. Hair collected during the initial investigation appeared to be from a brown bear. DNA was able to be extracted from some of the hair and from additional samples collected. Preliminary results identified female brown bear and female black bear DNA associated with the attack site and the victim, Daniel Schilling.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Mr. Schillings family and friends during this very sad time, said Cyndi Wardlow, Southcentral Regional Supervisor.
While we may never know the full circumstances, we are trying to learn everything we can about what happened to help people stay safe around wildlife in Alaska.
There were no witnesses to the events that led to the attack. An empty bear spray canister with the safety removed was found at the location of the attack, and it appeared that bear spray had been discharged at the site. No attractants, such as a dead moose or a food cache, were found in a search of the area during the investigation.
The attack may have been a predatory attack. Daniel Schilling was an avid hunter who had carried a revolver in a chest holster on a previous hunt.

Not to be called a bear spray failure.
“We’re gonna need a bigger dog.”
The failure is from the authorities constantly telling people to use bear spray or other useless tactics instead of what God and country gave us to defend ourselves. A gun.
Big gun as a backup.
Bear spray doesn’t work on BLM animals either. They keep coming back for more.
Never met a bear before, having lived in cities most of my life, but these bear sprays, have they ever been known to work?
Old joke—
“The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.
They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.
Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear’s sensitive nose and it will run away.
It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.
Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.”
I’m not going to find out. We have many black bears up here and some of them are brown (not grizzly). They take off when you fire a few rounds over their heads.
Are we to believe that he emptied the can before the bear was in range? Unlikely a hunter would fail in this way.
I can imagine his horror when he realized the spay was ineffective and he hadnt brought his SW 629 chambered in 44mag.
I usually wave my arms and yell like a Sasquatch. But Connecticut bears are pacifists.
Use generously, and it keeps your bear steaks from sticking to the grill - after you shoot the bear with a rifle.
Bear spray likely works best with common Black bears... It’s likely this was a Grizzly and spraying a Grizzly with bear spray would likely be akin to bringing a knife to a gun fight... You need firepower to take down a grizzly and we’re talking big fire power... Not some 22.
CV-19 no doubt. I would prefer at least a handful of .44 mag bear spray.
BLM Spray (canned tear gas) might work.
But with BLM, they fall back for a few seconds. Plenty of time to draw your real weapon.
Exactly the joke I was thinking about putting back on here. ROFL!!!
Like Crystal hot sauce?
He should have at least gone out with 2 or 3 dogs. 1 dog is at a disadvantage but 2 or more can really mess with even a bear.
My understanding is that, in North America, all brown bears are grizzlies. Or are you saying some of the Black Bears have brown hair?
Thanks guys.
Worth keeping in mind should I ever come across one of them big furry creatures.
