ROME Italian tourism for 2020 has suffered far worse than originally estimated with projected losses in the neighborhood of 100 billion euros, a new report reveals.
The joint report drafted by tourism confederation Confturismo Confcommercio and business group Assoturismo Confesercenti found that from June-August, the heart of Italys tourist season, the number of guests staying in official accommodation facilities in Italy was down 30 percent from 2019, with 65 million fewer tourists as restrictions remained in effect to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Probably a great time to visit.
Not to mention their “Hug a Chinese Person” initiative back in February.
What did you post the article to bash them? That takes b@lls.
That’s where pop came from and I still have family there and I will spend some money one way or another to help them out.
And yes the hug a Chinese person thing and other silly moves have caused a great part of this and that’s a shame.
And it is not my country or my home but I have a soft spot for it and will spend what I can to help
Yep. Keep those US dollars out of your economy and your EU borders wide open.
Was going to Rome in April. Trip is paid for and I consider it a sunk cost we never get back.
Europeans are staying close to home, and very few North American and Asian tourists right now. Generally folks who are living here like us. My wife and I took the train to Paris in July, usually a huge no-no due to prices, crowds, heat, etc. But it was awesome.
The hotel restaurant was closed, but the stores, other restaurants, museums, and other tourist attractions were open. All government owned attractions, like the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Musee d’Orsay, etc require you to reserve arrival times, in order to throttle the number of visitors passing through the entrances.
Last weekend we were in the Netherlands, somewhat similar conditions, museums and attractions require reservations, but we booked only a day in advance and had few issues.
No surprise..... Florence, Rome, Venice, Milan, the Amalfi Coast, and on and on. Italy is just fantastic to visit and they get millions upon millions of visitors ever year. Except this year....
Good to know....
Every day I put on the Venice Live Web Cam (they have nice classical music playing so I have it in the background), it’s starting to pick up a little bit, but still far from the normal crowds.
Thanks for the report. You ought to update France on your visit map then! :-)
Visited Rome, Naples, Amalfi coast a few years back
early in the tourist season. The areas we visited were mobbed with tourists. Contrasted with earlier visits back in the mid-60's while attached as a Marine to the 6th Fleet in the Med
when we had these tourist areas pretty much to ourselves.
If not for Covid, we would have landed in Italy today. Every two years we travel abroad in September - October, and this was supposed to be our forth trip to Italy. We have been to Venice (3X), Bologna (one of my favorite cities because of the lack of tourists), Parma, Verona (also a favorite), Florence (2X), Lucca, Pisa, Rome (3X), Naples, and Sorrento. This trip, the plan was to spend nearly all of our three weeks in the “mezzogiorno” — Naples and surrounding areas (where my wife’s family is from), Calabria, and Sicily.
They should return to God. Shouldn’t we all.
