Public support for sports plummets amid BLM protests, pandemic: survey

More people have a negative view of pro sports than a positive one, as public support for America’s athletics industry plummeted amid the coronavirus pandemic and athletes’ backing of the Black Lives Matter movement, a new survey released Monday reveals.

Americans who have a positive view of sports dropped from 45 percent positive in August 2019 to 30 percent last month, the Gallup poll found.

The number of citizens who had a negative view shot up from 25 percent last year to 40 percent in August 2020.

That’s a shift of 30 points — from a plus 20 percent positive rating to a minus ten percent negative rating.

The stunning drop comes at a time when sports such as baseball have shortened their season because of the pandemic.

Respondents who identified as Republicans soured the most on sports — from a plus positive 11 percent rating to a negative 35 percent. That’s a shift of 46 points in one year.

Now let’s talk about getting back the taxpayers money for those stadiums.

I don't expect American athletes to think like me. I don't expect them to be perfect people. But I do expect them to understand that they are Americans, and to have respect for the nation and the children who love them. There has definitely been bad prejudices in our society, but they haven't been against only one group of people, and we have spent a lot, as a society, to address these. Athletes could come out with positive messages, and these messages would be powerful.

One of my favorites (Oscar De La Hoya):

Not surprising...sports is supposed to be entertainment. Relaxation from the daily politics of life.

Make it political...it’s no longer an escape from daily life.

“While it’s not clear how much the various challenges and controversies swirling around the industry are each responsible for its slide in popularity, it is notable that sports has lost more support from Republicans and independents than from Democrats. In fact, Democrats’ view of the sports industry has not changed significantly in the past year, while Republicans’ has slipped from a +11 net-positive score in 2019 to a net -35 today, and independents’ from +26 to -10,” Gallup said.

Keep tuning out it is having an effect.

Nobody wants a spoonful of Marxism with their entertainment and nobody wants their tax dollars to go towards a shrine to Marxism (aka a stadium). It always amazes me how these franchises are worth a billion dollars but the taxpayers have to pay for the stadium. Good business model for the owners.

Exactly. These athletes should understand that they are entertainers. No different from actors, singers, jugglers, or high wire acts. We pay to see them all do what they do well ... sing, act, play in the band, hit a curve ball, throw the Hail Mary or whatever. We don’t care how they think or how they feel, for crying out loud. We just want to be entertained.

The US Open in New York is unwatchable this year. BLM posters on the backstop, players wearing BLM masks with names on them, continual mention of social justice by the commentators and EVERY commercial features blacks. It is the worst pandering I have ever seen.

I turned it on for a minute and saw a player wearing BLM socks. Quickly turned it off.

The NBA has a TV contract with TNT/ESPN to the tune of $2.6 billion annually. The term of the contract is 2016-2017 season through the 2024-2025 season. That’s $24 Billion and that explain why they feel so empowered. They are floating in cash.

However, the effect that tuning out will have is not on the players but on TNT and ESPN and their advertising revenue. Its time to teach ESPN a lesson. I cannot think of a better reason to boycott the NBA forever !!
