[Maryland's] Eastern Shore restaurants: “75% capacity increase doesn’t help us”
WMDT Salisbury, MD ^ | 9/21/20 | Taylor Lumpkin

SALISBURY, Md. – The impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on restaurants here on the Eastern Shore has been like no other.

“We’re about 50% down for the year, we’re also at 50% less employees than we had when we closed in March,” said Market Street Inn owner, Rob Mulford.

And with Governor Larry Hogan’s recent announcement that restaurants in the state can up their indoor capacity from 50 to 75%, you’d think business owners would be excited. But when they learned of the change, this was more of their reaction:

“75% capacity means absolutely zero,” said Mulford.

With 6ft spacing requirements...doesn’t help.

Could any restaurant, anywhere, fill all of its seats?

I would be surprised.

But I support their right to try.

People are finding out they like their own food better than restaurant food.

Heard that 60% of restaurants nation wide will be out of business by Christmas.

75% open with the 6 foot rule and constant sterilization not helping.

Our state is still at 50% capacity. I work in a small restaurant. The only thing saving us is that we have a decent sized patio-some restaurants don’t have that. Once the weather changes, things will be bad unless the governor “allows” full capacity. 75% capacity would change nothing.

They do fill, and often. My employers had to turn people away even before the reduced capacity. Now it feels like I’m watching money walk away.

a restaurant depends on high flow of customers...this 75% is not going to cut it...

It should be obvious by now that this is an orchestrated effort to destroy small business.

They’ve made it so onerous, that you really have to want to go out for dinner. The uncertainty of things just adds to it. Masks and the social anxiety they breed, and being in a room with strangers by itself is enough to make you a little anxious - and now the CDC is telling people “I’d stay away from restaurants if I were you...”

How are you supposed to stay in business?

Texas is also (finally) at 75%, in restaurants.

Total joke.

These establishements cannot make profit, at that rate....not to mention being shut down for half of the year, already.

And, employees have discovered they could make $$$ staying home, and have left for other pastures, by now.

“things will be bad unless the governor “allows” full capacity. 75% capacity would change nothing.”

I think it’s time we start changing dictators for true representatives.

We on the shore are trying to support our restaurants as best we can, but there is only so much money we can spend on carry out...

Well even if they went to 100%

Not everyone wants to go back to eating out

And many are out of work and/or watching their finances a lot more carefully so the customer bases for restaurants have shrunk

It is a really stupid rule if you think about it...

If you sit at a square table with for people you are facing each other

your backs are to the table next to you...

If you have tables for two in a row like McDonalds then I can see skipping a table..

North of the Mason-Dixon (PA) we’ve been stuck at 25% since July 15.

The ballyhooed increase to 50% doesn’t begin for another two weeks then only for those establishments which “self certify” aka expose themselves to civil and criminal charges if ANYTHING is “out of compliance”.

And you Merlanders are crabbing about another 50% of your capacity not being enough?

That why many of us call you BaltiMORONS.

I am not going to restaurants because I see everyone messing with their muzzle all day long at my office and they do it worse in a restaurant.

Gross and passes more germs...
