Anthony Fauci, the U.S.’s top infectious diseases expert, warned Tuesday that the country is “entering into a risk period” for rising coronavirus infections as fall begins.
Asked by CNN’s Sanjay Gupta “how bad … this could get” in the fall, Fauci responded, “It’s always the balance of trying not to frighten people at the same time of trying to jolt them into a realization of what needs to be done to protect themselves as individuals and the country.”
“We are entering into a risk period and we’ve got to act accordingly as we enter into that risk period,” Fauci said.

Why don’t we just put Dr. Fauci on a postage stamp and get it over with? Or maybe build a statue to him? Name a holiday after him? His desire for attention seems to know no bounds, and he’ll obviously say whatever he needs to to GET that attention.

I don’t pay much attention to Fauci, and maybe he’s not being as loose with his language as I think he is. But his statement sounds mendacious to me.
There are a lot of rhinoviruses — these typically cause the Common Cold. And this time of year, people get more rhinoviruses.
There are a lot of coronaviruses — these can present as a cold or they can be mistaken for an influenza virus or as something unique. Coronaviruses are very common and this time of year, people get more of them.
COVID-19 is a specific type of coronavirus. Some people are afraid of it. It’s a decent topic of debate as to how much we should panic about COVID-19.
Fauci seems to be saying that coronaviruses are common this time of year and THEREFORE we need to panic about COVID-19.
If that’s a rhetorical game he’s playing, he’s worse than I thought.
