But he was a musical genius. I guess it goes with the territory.....

I dunno, he was acclaimed for Pet Sounds, I didn't like the album.

i equate Pet Sounds to James Joyce's 'Ulysses'. You know it's supposed to be a masterpiece of high art but it's no fun to read. Personally I think Pet Sounds (a commercial flop) may have been eye popping to some (like Paul McCartney, he says) in 1966 but nearly 60 years later it's really easy to listen to it and say 'what's the fuss all about?'

"I dunno, he was acclaimed for Pet Sounds, I didn't like the album."

Other than a couple songs on the stereo re-mix (Good Vibrations and God Only Knows), I've never gotten why Pet Sounds is considered one of the most influential albums in music history. One of the biggest hits, "Wouldn't It Be Nice", was a rehash of some surfing music and just bubble-gum pop.

Still, I have to give Brian Wilson credit for re-mixing and adding other instruments, along with his arrangements. All the background music is probably why Pet Sounds is in the top of pop musical accomplishments.

I literally grew up with the Beach Boys just one suburb over, and to this day love their harmonies.
