Engine Trouble: The 1 Thing Holding Back China’s New Warplanes

Beijing has succeeded in copying and stealing their way forward, but they have hit a snag.

The Chinese military is building up a meaningful force of J-20 stealth fighters, Y-20 strategic airlifters and other high-tech military aircraft while also developing a new stealth fighter, fighter-bomber and heavy bomber.

But for all of these advancements, Chinese industry still is struggling to manufacture arguably the most important subsystems for these new planes. Their engines.

Aviation website Alert 5 spotted a stock-exchange filing by the Hebei subsidiary of China’s Central Iron & Steel Research Institute. The filing including production projections for military engines for the next decade, and reveals some startling shortfalls.

Production and development gaps could result in the latest Chinese warplanes flying with older engine models, including imported Russian motors that might be underpowered and unreliable. The mismatch between airframes and engines could be a drag on the overall performance of Chinese military aircraft.

Technology transfer coming in... just after the inauguration. Remember how the Clinton administration managed to forget to lock the back door and the Chicoms to steal our nuke secrets? Same playbook.

They'll have all the technical assistance they want if Biden is sworn in.

A lot of gas turbine development for aviation applications goes on at Shanghai Jiao Tung University, which is modeled after MIT. Jiao Tung University has its old campus in Shanghai; I’ve visited it and seen its AI department; at least as much as they allowed me to enter.

Jiao Tung University has a “new” campus that is well outside Shanghai; foreigners are not allowed to visit it, although a large three-dimensional model of its campus is displayed at the downtown campus. It is very big, similar in size to a land-grant university in the United States.

Isn’t that why they had Hunter Biden try to buy the USA company with better engine technology?

Where he once was an oil industry expert, Hunter Biden is now on the board of China’s major military aviation manufacturer.

Chairman Xi, those damn blades spin so fast, under much heat and pressure. The titanium milling is not going well, and two of our spies were busted in Houston last year.

Dear chairman, give us another trillion Yuan and 24 months and we will bury the Yankees.

Chairman? Chairman Xi?

Boom!

Russian engines. Chinese airframes. What could go wrong.

The Clinton’s made our adversaries submarines more silent in one deal - overnight.

Unforgivable.

I guess they just need to steal the right technical information, because they damn sure aren’t going to be able to create it on their own.

either they copy the exact parts needed, or they need to run the redesigned parts with expensive proprietary simulation software packages with correctly chosen algorithms and input data.

It’s a cultural problem.

The concept of “quality” has never been in their cultural DNA.

One makes more money by screwing one’s customer with poor quality products.

It’s throughout their supply chain.

Yeah, but they make a million of them. Some of them might even fly twice.

Maintenance must be a bitch on those things.
