Car drives into crowd in Trier, 2 deaths and 15 serious injuries, one person arrested

According to the Volksfreund, a car has driven from the Porta Nigra to the main market square. According to information from SWR there have been two deaths and 15 injuries. Police is present and have locked down the area; a helicopter is circling above. The SEK (police tactical unit) from Wittlich was scrambled.

A source close to RTL has said that a local school in the neighbourhood is on lockdown and following protocols in the scenario of a possible terrorist attack. Parents of children at the Ausonius-Grundschule were called to pick up their children, as they would not be allowed to go home alone.

An eye witness has reported that a dark-grey Range Rover raced through the Brotstraße at high speed. People were hurled through the air, he says.

The city's mayor, Wolfram Leibe, said the following to SWR:

"We have a driver that ran amok in the city centre. We have at least two deaths and 15 severely injured individuals. At the moment we are trying to get an overview of the situation, emergency services have responded from the entire region, and now we're first trying to save people."

It seems that the street the car has driven on would usually be the area where the annual Christmas market is, cancelled this year due to Covid-19.

Shops and stores in the Fleischstraße are said to be closing their doors. Many people are in tears, according to Volksfreund.

Clearly and oppressed migrant. This person should be coddled at all costs.

And of course, bring in more of them!

Beautiful town - the old 1st century gate survived when a church was built around it. Napoleon used the church for target practice, and the old gate was revealed.

If all the people in the market were peace loving refugees, this would never have happened.

Regnery Publishing uses the Porta Nigra on its logo because the Regnerys are from Trier. Many, if not most on this board have read books published by Regnery.

I do have a number of Regnery books on my shelves.

That was an interesting point about their logo — how did you learn of that?!

Some of my ancestors’ details are contained in Trier church records, so the name jumped out at me. I hope the injured recover quickly and completely.

I’ve met Alfred Regnery, who heads the company, on a couple of occasions, and he told me the story of the logo. I visited Trier in 1972, when I was living in Germany.

" Porta Nigra on its logo because the Regnerys are from Trier "

Visited Trier several times when I was stationed at Spangdahlem AFB in 1971. Porta Nigra was very interesting. Excavation of more Roman ruins was continuing and I've always wondered what else they discovered.

On another note, the Schieffer Keller was a cool place to visit in Trier. It's a restaurant, located many feet below the street level but once the entrance was at street level. It was originally used as a warehouse a couple of hundred (or more) years ago. However, with the destruction of Trier during centuries of different wars it became buried. After WWII it was rediscovered and made into a resturant.

Cool story. They do good work. I’ve been to Germany, but not near Trier.
