HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The SH-288 toll lanes are open and you'll have to pay to use them starting today. Until now, the fees had been waived.
Adjustable pricing is based on time of day and volume of traffic.
In other words, if the lanes get too congested, toll prices will increase to control traffic.
"I think you have to realize that the tolls will be managed based on time of day. If you're in the tolls during peak, it will cost a little more. If you're driving off peak, it will be less. And that's how they're designed," said Raynese Edwards with Blueridge Transportation Group.
SH-288's 10.3 miles of new freeway, including huge flyovers and managed toll lanes, stretch from downtown Houston to Clear Creek.
The project broke ground in 2016. It was supposed to take 1,000 days from start to finish, but that original mid-2019 completion date got pushed back over and over thanks to repeated weather events, including Harvey and construction delays.

PING!
Well, just thank goodness Obiden was elected..
Yes, when O-Biden’s in Houston, he’ll use the SR-288 express lanes like those special lanes on Russian streets that were reserved for Soviet bureaucrats.
I used to work with the company that designed this project! The project manager is a wonderful guy!
Most people have “beepers” to pay their tolls, so the flexible toll prices won’t even be noticed.
Beepers? I use an EZ-Pass up here, and it doesn’t beep. And doesn’t TxTag also have those little decals that can get the job done, instead of bulky transponders like I have?
For most of the ‘70s and half of the ‘80s I had a job in East Texas which regularly required me to drive into Houston from the east on I-10. For the entire duration of that job, 13 years, I-10 entering Houston from the east was under construction and I never saw any sign of progress. The detour roadways wore out and had to be repaved several times. There was one particular worker who had an enormous gut and always wore a white t-shirt and hardhat. I passed by him several times over a period of months at the same spot and he was without fail just leaning on a shovel.
I finally moved away in the middle of the ‘80s, but I often wonder about Big Gut Guy, if he ever actually got that shovel dirty, or if he made it to retirement with a pristine shovel and had it bronzed, as a remembrance of his long career in road construction.
The gov’t orders you to wear a mask, to stay home, skip the holidays and charges you money to pay for roads you already pay for while tracking your movements.
Just means the feeder roads won’t have much traffic. The only toll roads I will use is the Beltway and the Hardy toll road.
The majority of drivers are driving in sync with their working hours-—which they do NOT control.
IF government wants to control traffic flow better-—work on staggered hours for businesses.
