icu’s are not overflowing

a story posted on here in the last wekk talked about hospital capacities, they are on average 70-75% full, icu’s are about 80%

hospital admin was saying profitable hospitals tically run 85% capacity or so

so they have plenty of room right now

Yeah...that’s hilarious.

You can turn almost any room into an ICU room. What you CANT get is more nurses and respiratory therapists. Those you cannot just pick up in an ICU r US.

Everything is so simple.

Indeed. We should always ask what percentage of the ICU patients are COVID related.

because the biggest part of increasing a ICU capacity is staffing highly trained and skilled nurses to card for the patients? You can’t find those under a rock somewhere

It is because their goal is to destroy jobs and businesses. It is that simple.

How about keeping patients out of the ICUs by promoting early/outpatient treatment with Ivermectin or HCQ + zinc or all three?

Not everywhere. It varies by location. While easing finally in our area almost every hospital capable of physically doing so has opened extra ICU space. Along with this they are stretching traditional staffing models and giving ICU nurses twice the number of patients (or more) than they would usually care for. The stress on the system is real

We’ve heard similar from a Houston Med Ctr ER nurse friend.

She said ICU capacity is actually lower than it was, in May, and about the same as this time, last year.

They’re lying about a lot of these numbers, I think.

How specialized is ICU care? Can’t all the medical staff furloughed because hospitals aren’t doing routine non-pandemic care to the extent they were be diverted to ICU’s? Even if they can’t do some of the more specialized stuff, can they not be used in secondary roles that non-medical staff are unqualified for?

It takes a special skill set to care for a patient on 5 or 6 IV drips, a ventilator, often a dialysis machine and multiple monitors and pumps. Besides operating the technology the nurses need to have assessment skills to understand when things are going south with patients who frequently cannot communicate or even respond. They are amazing individuals with a lot of training. That cannot be replicated overnight

I was in the hospital a couple of days ago: KECK which is the University of California at Los Angeles hospital. IOW: USC’s hospital. Not busy that I could see. I hope it remains that way.

Good hospital. I have 2 appointments at Cedars Sinai next week .... but they’ve been on lockdown. I was there last week and it was empty.
