The residence where the victims were kidnapped was only a few blocks from where I was living 20 years ago. It was bitterly cold that morning and police cars were everywhere. As I drove to work, I heard on the radio what had happened.

One of the victims survived the attack and described in court the horror of what took place that horrible night. They shot her in the back of the head too, execution style, but the bullet was deflected off her hair braid, sparing her life. She pretended to be dead, laying there in the snow. After the killers left, she walked nearly a mile totally naked in absolutely frigid conditions to get help.

Had there not been a surviving eye witness, its entirely possible (perhaps likely) the Carr brothers would have walked.
