Washington's Order Against Profanity

General Orders August 3, 1776

The General is sorry to be informed that the foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing, a vice hitherto little known in our American Army is growing into fashion.

He hopes that the officers will, by example as well as influence, endeavor to check it and that both they and the men will reflect that we can little hope of the blessing of Heaven on our army if we insult it by our impiety and folly. Added to this it is a vice so mean and low without any temptation that every man of sense and character detests and despises it.

(Signed,) George Washington

This part is intriguing coupled with the fact that America prevailed against overwhelming odds: ...we can little hope of the blessing of Heaven on our army if we insult it by our impiety and folly.

Reports are that General Washington went ballistic following the Battle of Monmouth. Word is that Troops were stunned at the General’s use of ‘colorful metaphors’ towards his Officers. and that they were shocking to Soldiers of the Continental Army in earshot.

Thanks - Excellent!!! A lot of servicemen I’ve been acquainted with said their language was to be excused as they learned it in the military! Never bought THAT!

Thank you for the very delightful reminder of the courtesy demanded by our first president.

His words will always ring true.

When I sense that things are about to go badly with another poster, I say goodbye and withdraw.

Every election season is a bit crazy around here, but this one is exceptional because of the obvious fraud.

Thank you, Jim, for providing us with a place to come together and vent (within reason, of course!)

Julie

IIRC, Baron Von Steuben swore at the troops at Valley Forge in three different languages.
