Marijuana legalization bill inches closer to approval in NJ

New Jersey voters approved a measure in November to legalize recreational marijuana. More than three months later, Gov. Phil Murphy still hasn't signed a bill to make it happen...

The purported holdup has been Murphy's concern that the proposed law hasn't specified uniform penalties for underage users.

Last week, state Sen. Nilsa Cruz-Perez, D-Camden, and state Sen. Nick Scutari, D-Union, introduced a "cleanup" bill to address Murphy's concerns...

The cleanup bill is slated to be heard in committee in Trenton on Monday. It must pass both the Assembly and the Senate — and there is no guarantee it will — before Thursday for it to proceed to the governor's desk, as per the agreement between Murphy and the Legislature.

"It's my understanding we have broad agreement," Scutari said. "It may not be unanimous, but we have majority. I think the governor will sign this simultaneously along with the other two bills that will create the cannabis industry and stop arrests."

The article goes on to quote David Nathan, a psychiatrist and founder of Doctors for Cannabis Regulation.

"The preponderance of evidence shows cannabis can indeed be harmful to the developing brain. The younger you are and the more you use, the worse the outcomes appear to be.

Legalization is just working so well here in Washington. If you love the smell of a skunk that has been run over... that turns out to be the driver in the car in front of you... you will love it. I haven’t gone a day in about a year when some pot head on the road in front of me hasn’t stunk up my car. And oh yeah, they drive badly. In our neighborhood if you think that you migh enjoy spending a little time outside in the evening... you better be ready for the stench. It even stinks up our house depending on which way the wind is blowing. Yeah it is just so great. Go for it Jersey... you will love it!

Just imagine the money that would suck out of New York City and the revenue New Jersey is going get. Of course, NJ will spend 10 or 20 times what they bring in but at least it’s benefiting them at the expense of Cuomo and DiBlasio.

“Legalization is just working so well here in Washington.”

I remember some of the insights that you provided before, from the Washington State experience with legalized marijuana - increased crime rates around marijuana stores, and more derelicts and mental cases.

Looks like NY State and Virginia may legalize recreational use this year as well, in addition to Vermont, Massachusetts and New Jersey. It will become the norm in the Northeast Corridor.

Looks like NY is going to legalize this year as well. That revenue issue may well be the big driver.

I hate people against legalization as much as I hate gun-grabbers, NO fate is too bad for them.

That will increase the number of kids born with scrambled brains. But hey there is a lot of money to be made with sprcial education programs and the care of the disabled.

Legalized Marijuana is just one of the more glaring signs of an area in complete societal decline. It is very amusing to me that we have those here who try to argue that legalization goes hand in hand with conservative ideals when it is always the most leftist areas in the country who want to do this. It goes hand in had with defunding the police, universal goverment income for all, abortion “rights” and every other slime bag idea in the leftist agenda.

And then there is the argument that legalization will not increase consumption. Marijuana in this state is now a larger “industry” than alcohol and tobacco combined. During the continuing shutdowns marijuana was declared an essential industry by our governor Dimsley, so while construction workers were losing their jobs... Marijuana “workers” had no worries. This place has always turned a blind eye to marijuana, but in the last few years it has gone crazy.

That would benefit the consumers of both states. The higher price loses the business when they’re next door to each other.

I doubt it. I personally would rather live next to the rendering works downtown or on top of the stack at pulp mill. Even my 11 year old dog's farts are not as bad as the smell coming from the cars in front of us.

With Dems controlling the Legislature and Presidency, I’d expect Federal decriminalization/delisting this year.

Could see the rise of some big new corporate interests, on a Nationwide basis.

Legalization is a racist policy that negatively impacts minority entrepreneurs.

it is always the most leftist areas in the country who want to do this.

Not so - red states Alaska, Montana, and South Dakota have done it.

Doubtful; women who before legalization were responsible enough to not use marijuana, will after legalization remain responsible enough to not use while pregnant - and irresponsible women were using even before legalization.

The preponderance of evidence shows cannabis can indeed be harmful to the developing brain. The younger you are and the more you use, the worse the outcomes appear to be.

Kids have been reporting since well before any state legalized marijuana sales that they could get it almost as easily as beer or cigarettes, despite the latter two drugs being much more widespread among adults. This indicates that legalizing licensed selling to adults works better than criminalization at keeping drugs away from kids - which makes sense, because only under licensed legalization do those who sell to adults have an incentive to not also sell to kids (namely, the risk of losing their legal adult sales).

You left off these statements from the doctor. I wonder why?

"I'm happy we're ending our reliance on the criminal justice system to prevent use by minors. That's because it simply doesn't work [...] The best way to prevent underage use is telling kids what the real dangers are."
