ERCOT to change Texas energy prices to meet high demand amid winter storm

A Public Utility Commission order stated that ERCOT should correct any past prices to reflect the current shortage of energy...

TEXAS, USA — With nearly 4 million Texans in need of power amid the winter storm that struck the state, demand for energy is exceptionally high. The demand has exceeded the supply that the state has to offer.

As a result, the Public Utility Commission of Texas held an emergency meeting on Monday where officials introduced an order that would adjust energy prices. The order said in part, "Energy prices should reflect scarcity of the supply. If customer load is being shed, scarcity is at its maximum, and the market price for the energy needed to serve that load should also be at its highest."

The order also stated that The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the organization that monitors Texas' power grid, should correct any past prices to reflect the current shortage of energy. However, there are caps in place in the order to make sure consumers are protected from skyrocketing prices.

The order also stated that energy companies across the state need to continue to shed power during the extreme weather conditions.

KVUE has reached out to ERCOT to learn more about how this will affect Austin area consumers.

In other words; Energy Prices skyrocket under Biden.

So what does this mean? Starting to think some companies may go out of business if this means prices above the 9000 cap. And what about consumers?

They’re going to cut off your power, charge you more for the power you’re not getting, and then tell you they need more wind and solar. Thanks Perry, thanks Pickens, thanks Abbott, thanks bush.....idiots.

Their names should be brought up every time. In the old days, you broke it meant you paid for it.

The shenanigans of Enron/California are headed toward the Lone Star State.

Prepare to be financially sheared.

On its face this sounds really stupid.

Business owners can’t GET to their businesses to shut the power off because the roads are pure ice!

1- Wind farms freeze and stop generating power.
2- Demand skyrockets amid polar temps and decreased supply.
3- TX PUC orders electric oversight board to raise rates.

(This is how liberalism works)

Joe Biden’s plans to rely on unreliable power sources should prove to be highly profitable.

"A Public Utility Commission order stated that ERCOT should correct any past prices to reflect the current shortage of energy..."

Say what???

Am I crazy, or does that mean that people should be billed more for something already purchased and paid for?

Have to wait and see, but the EFL that came with my electricity contract doesn’t say anything about them being able to change my rate. There are some floating point contracts out there, and lot of businesses pay a floating rate. They are hosed.

My BIL in CA was paying upwards of $.33/kW-h, when I was paying $.07. Overall, the market has been basically good.

The problem is all the green subsidies to wind and solar, and pressure to get rid of coal and nuclear. Half the wind turbines in WTx are frozen and useless. The greenies need to be told to go away and shutup.

I’m on an electric co-op here in NE Texas. No outages and no rolling blackouts. That ERCOT crap is all because they cowtowed to the federal environmentalists and agreed to NOT step up energy production to meet the demand for fear of exceeding emission standards. ERCOT needs to GO!

I think you are not crazy. They are what you think they are saying.

Then, some poor people won’t be able to afford it, so they’ll just charge EVEN MORE to the middle class people (who will soon not be able to afford it, either).

That’s what happens when you’re dumb enough to allocate 25% energy production to green energy all while sitting on some of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves. Can you say STUPID?

Agree. They should everyone be fired and made to pay for their own incompetence. This is Texas and they will answer to us.
