Chicago statues of Columbus, Presidents Washington and Lincoln among commission’s list of 41 controversial monuments throughout city
CHICAGO TRIBUNE ^ | FEB 17, 2021 | GREGORY PRATT

Statues of Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley, as well as the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, were among the 41 public statues and other commemorative markers identified on a list from Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration on Wednesday for further review as part of “a racial healing and historical reckoning project” started last summer.

The city launched a website on Wednesday detailing the controversial monuments flagged by the mayor’s commission on monuments. Other statues on the list included a monument to President Ulysses S. Grant, a Benjamin Franklin statue, a police memorial tied to the Haymarket Riot and a statue of Leif Ericson at Humboldt Park.

Disputes over the city’s Columbus statues erupted last summer between protesters and police, including a violent clash at Grant Park. Lightfoot removed the statues but said the move would only be “temporary.”

Not all 41 monuments will be taken down, city officials said, but they merit further discussion. It remains unclear whether the city will bring back the Columbus statues, as Lightfoot suggested.

“This project is a powerful opportunity for us to come together as a city to assess the many monuments and memorials across our neighborhoods and communities — to face our history and what and how we memorialize that history,” Lightfoot said in a statement. “Given the past year and in particular the past summer that made clear history isn’t past, it is essential that residents are a part of this conversation.”

This is quite bizarre. I'm posting the offending monuments in post 2. I see none that are offensive. Though I acknowledge to the left the Haymarket Riot, police stopping a riot might offend. As would a statue to The Republic. But multiple Lincolns, multiple indians since they never lived here, Grant, Sherman, lesser known Maj Gen John Logan. And replace them with what, the people they fought? Like Lee? John Wilkes Booth or maybe Lenin?

How much longer is the citizenry going to allow the brain-dead nihilists to eradicate our culture, and our history ?

We’re watching the destruction of our country, and no one dares to stop it. Thus, we deserve everything that’s happening to us.

If the statue is of a white man, it has to go is their belief. And then the statues of any person or group that do not endorse the theories of Black Lives Matter and Antifa.

The goal, erase our history, Long live 1984!

The US gave Iceland a nice statue of Erikson in 1930 to commemorate their one thousandth year as a country.
It’s right outside the Hallgrimskirkja.

These people have gone absolutely off the reservation (pun intended). It should be no surprise how they are so foaming at the mouth vitriolic about anything on which they disagree; they lack any sense of proportion, historical context, and most of all imagination.

All these monuments, whatever you think of them, are opportunities to learn something. We all carry devices in our pockets that can stream videos, or sound, or text, that can enable people to learn about the monument from a variety of perspectives and opinions - art, culture, history, design, politics, you name it. It’s not “just a symbol” of what some people think it may be. Who made it? When was it made? What materials? Why? Lots of learning opportunities.

Like the statue of Lincoln that was commissioned by freed slaves. They wanted to tear it down because they interpret its meaning in a way totally different than how it was intended by those who actually built it. It would be sort of like the French burning down Versailles because they got rid of the monarchy. Nonsense. It has much more meaning than just a symbol, which is entirely subjective.

The one monument they probably should address (I’m surprised it’s finally caught their attention) is the Balbo monument behind the Field Museum, since that is actually a legitimate fascist monument (donated by Mussolini).

Those statues and monuments are all remarkable. Removing them (or doing whatever they plan to do with them) is doing away with a most of the Chicago history worth remembering. And a handful of people have taken it upon themselves to make the decisions. I would hope there are still enough non-cretins left in Chicago who value art and history and will fight back.

Well, there you have it. Everything’s offensive.

Tearing them all down will most assuredly stop the daily black-on-black murders in Chicago. The yutes are only protesting cultural appropriation.

Thankfully most of the problems of the big city are taken care of so these statue problems can be addressed. I suspect some of these statues are family gathering places after dark so the children can enjoy the night air and see the lights of the city in all their splendor. Picnics after dark, lively songs, all part of living in the peaceful and tranquil city of Chicago.............

And what is the state nickname of Illinois?

Isn’t it wonderful that throughout hundreds of thousands years of human history we have, for the very first time, leaders who are more virtuous and noble than any generation that came before? Wonder how they will be viewed in 100 years?

Doesn’t bother me, but I guess you can make a case. In honors Balbo who did use poison gas in Africa. But in the early 30s that wasn’t too far from common usage in WWI but was after the convention barring them. I think it’s nice having a 2,000 year old Roman pillar.

They are trying to erase western civilization. “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”

These ‘City Leaders’ are only listening to the protesters, who only know to tear-down. History is bunk to them. They cry havoc and are listened to as they are LEFTists!

Honesty would be a vote to keep or remove, anything else is the voice of the MOB!
