To fight ‘cancel culture,’ California state senator would make political affiliation a protected class

State Sen. Melissa, R-Lake Elsinore, is taking aim at “cancel culture” with a bill that would make it illegal in California to deny someone a job or housing because of their political affiliation.

The Diversity of Thought Act, which would prohibit discrimination such as firing someone or refusing them a mortgage based on their political affiliation, is one of two bills Melendez introduced that seek to elevate political affiliation to a protected class under the state constitution — just like race, religion, disability and other statuses.

The other bill would require schools to investigate bullying based on political affiliation.

Both invoke what has become known as “cancel culture:” the practice of forcing someone out of a position because they’ve said something that offends others. Especially since the rise of social media, members of the public have risen en masse to criticize comments by celebrities and others that they find racist or otherwise offensive, leading others to say they no longer want to do business with that celebrity.

The ideal of free speech should already protect people from being fired over a political statement, said John Berry, a cabinet member with the Redlands Tea Party Patriots.

“Old-time liberals used to say ‘I disagree with you, but I’ll die for your right to say it,’ they can’t be found anymore,” Berry said. “Cancel culture is real. It’s really just Marxism on the march. Liberals have been preaching tolerance for decades, but now their true colors have come out.”

A constitutional right to say something offensive doesn’t and shouldn’t stop others from declining to associate with you because of what you said, said Tisa Rodriguez, chair of the Riverside County Democratic Party.

Great idea but will never pass in a Democrat run state.
I’m surprised I still have a tongue having worked around Democrats all my years after leaving the military.
All it takes is some woman to say “I’m afraid to work around a NRA life member” and you are history at my last job, an observatory funded by Californians.

I can’t really express how bad an idea that is.
I know the People’s Democratic Republic of California is a sick, sick place, but creating a new ‘protected class’ is insane.

It shouldn't be necessary but Cal IS an insane place.

I agree. The last year has taught us that justice is no longer blind, but takes into account the race and politics of both the victim and the victimizer.

This law would force churches to hire Satanists and abortionists, while continuing to allow socialist corporations to fire whoever the cancel mobs decide to attack next.

Doesn’t matter.
Such a law will, inevitably, be turned against us.

I like the idea. No one should ever have to face the threat of the loss of a job over their political views, period. At least as applies to anything taxpayer-funded or, by extension, receiving taxpayer monies.

It’s like religion or sexuality- if it doesn’t actually affect how someone does the job, anyone bothered by it is the one who should be fired.
