srael’s Defense Ministry and the German Federal Defense Ministry on Tuesday signed a government-to-government agreement to supply Rafael’s Trophy active protection system to the German military for the latter’s fleet of Leopard 2 tanks.

Trophy protects against a wide variety of anti-tank threats, while also maximizing the vehicle’s ability to identify the enemy location to crews and combat formation, thereby providing greater survivability and maneuverability in all combat theatres.

The development of the Trophy program was led by the Directorate of Defense R&D (MAFAT) in the Israeli Defense Ministry and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. It is currently deployed in more than 1,000 systems in all major IDF ground combat platforms (Merkava, Namer, Abrams, Stryker, and Bradley).

The agreement was signed by the Director-General of the Israel Defense Ministry, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Eshel, and by an official in the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service-Support. It includes the provision of systems for a company of tanks, interceptors, and spare parts, as well as operational and technical training. The systems will be delivered over the next several years.

Sounds like the German APS projects aren’t working out well enough or fast enough... If they were even vaguely close to working, the Germans would never buy imported gear.

Um, APS like these already have known defeat mechanisms. It’s called a saturation attack - same solution against the Phalanx CIWS

Actually pulling off a multi-axis saturation attack, however, is easier said than done.

So that’s what? 10 tanks?

The Germans are really going all-in here.

Yeah, but that was 7 years ago. They’ve been taking steps to correct the problem and upgrade their gear - such as the Leopard 2A7 upgrade program and dumping the G36.

The Germans did go down the same road we did with ignoring the Trophy systems and waiting for vaporware from local vendors - in our case, Raytheon’s still-vaporware QuickKill system. In their case, they had Rheinmetall offering an APS, among others.

That’s initial buy in, to see if it works for them. It is also likely a “Dear German defense contractors, this is your last chance to get us something that works. Otherwise we’ll buy more of these.” message.

Consider that our initial buy of Trophy for the Abrams was similarly couched.

A NATO tank company is usually 14 tanks.

Our initial buy in for Trophy was brigade combat team or less:

https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/14748/us-army-buys-israeli-trophy-system-so-its-tanks-can-blast-incoming-projectiles

Now we are (or were, pre-Biden) starting to buy them in to equip all our active Abrams.

IED countermeasures are also a thing, but it is beyond the scope of the original article.

Almost all of the Leopard losses in the last decade have been in Syria to Russian heavy ATGM, not IEDs. These were ex-German Army frontline Leopards with near-peer armor to the Abrams, and Turkey had equipped many of them with ERA. Turns out the Russian ATGMs work as advertised and easily penetrate a Leopard 2A4 or A5 even with ERA.

Yup, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been trying to improve. Note that they’re dumping the G36, for example.

I would not bet against you, that sounds spots on.

And I’m clearly not up on modern TOE. But close enough for purposed of discussion.

What’s a full-strength company, then, three platoons with 4 tracks and a 2 track HQ element?

We spent the Iraq and Afghan wars hearing about this new, terrible thing called IEDs. When in fact they are just landmines. The fact remains that driving down a road that you have not secured and had eyes on creates a vulnerability to landmines. Not a darn thing new about that.
