On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” New York Times columnist David Brooks said that the only way to have a meaningful impact on gun violence is to decrease the number of guns in the U.S., something countries like Australia have done.
Brooks said, “[T]he more I look at it, and I’m not alone in this, the more you conclude that the simple problem is we have too many guns in America. There’s upwards of, some estimates, 350 million guns in this country. And so, when you get a lonely young man who’s detached and sociopathic, getting a gun for that person is not hard. And so, we spend a lot of time on these things like background checks and assault weapon bans, and that’s fine. But a lot of effort has been put into things that aren’t that effective. We just have to have a debate on how do we reduce the total number of guns in [the] country? And other countries have done this, Australia and others, through buybacks and other things. It’s obviously super difficult politically. But, to me, it’s the only way to have a meaningful difference.”

Ridiculous...Reducing no. of bad people will make a difference. This guy had a history and should have never been able to purchase a gun.
Well folks, he is only a journalist. One can forgive him for logic achievable only by those to whom the use of a wedge is equivalent to an application of tensor calculus.
Is David going to volunteer to round up the excessive number of firearms he thinks exists in the country?
Oh, the impact will be meaningful alright. It will increase drastically as fewer good guys with guns will be around to prevent or limit the carnage.
We don’t need fewer guns - WE NEED FEWER CRIMINALS...

David Brooks might be happier somewhere else. He has rights. He should go. They can do with him what they want. He can take David Frum and Bret Stephens with him.

You are right. Generally speaking we don’t have a gun problem. We have a drug problem.
Well, they are reducing the number of guns, in quite an effective way! They are taking guns our of the hands of law enforcement officers, as they tie those hands behind their backs. Fewer and fewer guns for law enforcement, and more and more in the hands of criminals and anarchists is the rule.
Surprised that Brooks does not recognize this fact. Chicago, Baltimore, LA, Portland, etc etc etc, are all benefiting from the destruction, murder, and economic collapse the Democrats are bringing to all of us! Let us be thankful, now!
