if he had said ‘my not wearing a mask, etc’ he would have been correct...in this sentence,’wearing’ is the gerund as a subject of a sentence, and ‘was a mistake’ is the ‘subject complement’, as it follows a linking verb, which is a form of the verb ‘to be...’
also, gerunds can function as the object of either a verb, or a preposition...
