Who are the Uighurs and why is China being accused of genocide? China says crackdown necessary to prevent terrorism and root out Islamist extremism

China is facing mounting criticism from around the world over its treatment of the mostly Muslim Uighur population in the north-western region of Xinjiang.

Human rights groups believe China has detained more than a million Uighurs over the past few years in what the state defines as "re-education camps".

There is evidence of Uighurs being used as forced labour and of women being forcibly sterilised.

The US is among several countries to have accused China of committing genocide and crimes against humanity through its repression of the Uighurs.

China denies such allegations, saying it has been combatting separatism and Islamist militancy in the region.

Who are the Uighurs?

There are about 12 million Uighurs, mostly Muslim, living in north-western China in the region of Xinjiang, officially known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).

The Uighurs speak their own language, similar to Turkish, and see themselves as culturally and ethnically close to Central Asian nations.

They make up less than half of the Xinjiang population.

Recent decades saw a mass migration of Han Chinese (China's ethnic majority) to Xinjiang, and the Uighurs feel their culture and livelihoods are under threat.

What was the build-up to the crackdown?

Anti-Han and separatist sentiment rose in Xinjiang from the 1990s, flaring into violence on occasion. In 2009 some 200 people died in clashes in Xinjiang, which the Chinese blamed on Uighurs who want their own state. But in recent years a massive security crackdown has crushed dissent.

Xinjiang is now covered by a pervasive network of surveillance, including police, checkpoints, and cameras that scan everything from number plates to individual faces. According to Human Rights Watch, police are also using a mobile app to monitor peoples' behaviour, such as how much electricity they are using and how often they use their front door.

What does China say?

China has said reports it has detained Uighurs are completely untrue.

It says the crackdown is necessary to prevent terrorism and root out Islamist extremism and the camps are an effective tool for re-educating inmates in its fight against terrorism.

It insists that Uighur militants are waging a violent campaign for an independent state by plotting bombings, sabotage and civic unrest, but it is accused of exaggerating the threat in order to justify repression of the Uighurs. China has dismissed claims it is trying to reduce the Uighur population through mass sterilisations as "baseless", and says allegations of forced labour are "completely fabricated".

What would Rand Paul do? He wants us out of foreign affairs/entanglements. We created this monster. So now that we broke it we own it. Just who did we keep those shipping lanes open for anyway?

You do realize the USA is on the verge of losing the moral high ground on this issue. Sure, we haven’t been rounding people up and shipping them off in train cars. Not exactly. Just “immigrants kids in cages”. Our leaders constantly talk about what a racist and deplorable country we are, with police gunning down minorities in cold blood, systemic structural racist oppression, an unjust justice system, and now social and political censorship becoming normalized.

And we go to the Chinese and they say “but you admit you are no better than us”.

I hate the cop chinee and muzzloids equally, so I’m unable to care if they kill each other. I only ask that both sides succeed completely.

When the US fights against terrorism, we are targeted. It’s surprising China isn’t being attacked, or even criticized by other Islamic countries.

One huge difference — XinJiang is the HOME of Uighurs. These Children in cages are COMING TO AMERICA.

We can solve our moral high ground problem by sending all of the illegals home.

We created this monster. So now that we broke it we own it.

The PRC's oppression of Tibet, Xinjiang and other areas they occupy has been going for decades - long before Nixon and Kissinger started the US on the path of PRC appeasement. We didn't create this monster - they'd be doing it regardless of US policy toward the PRC.

China also says they are not Han Chinese and are in the way. Islam, like any other religion in China, is a existential threat to the CCP and must be eradicated by any means possible. The CCP is a culture all its own

“The CCP wants to control everything and only allows pro-CCP organizations, even in foreign countries. If an organization is big enough, the CCP will try to control it; if it won’t cooperate, the CCP will treat it as an enemy.” a mainland Chinese overseas student.

This is of course a shitlib wet dream. Once they've slaughtered 80 percent of us, that is.

the Chinese used the same tactics as they use in Tibet - live fire or back in the 60s tested a neutron bomb on at least 2 Uighur villages.

Except it’s not a moral issue to them. It’s a geopolitical question. Our leaders on the left have so thoroughly trashed the country to the world in nearly every conceivable and unreasonable way, that any attempt to rebuke the Chinese for their oppression and genocide is met with ridicule and scorn. They just throw our own words back in our faces. These leftists have set back the country and human rights by decades with propaganda in pursuit of power. Same as them, in a way. But to them, no meaningful difference. It is dangerous not for us but the world, as we continue to be ineffective at containing China and continue to finance their industrial and military expansion.

The Chinese leaders have made themselves out to be our competitors.

Alright.

Then we should provide support to the Uighurs.

Doesn’t have to be military support, but it could be.

China is out trying to chase everyone’s fishing boats off the water most everywhere.

They keep threatening Taiwan and Vietnam and India and anyone that might be in their way.

Alright.

They need to take care of ALL their people before trying to rule even more of the world.

Thieves and bullies.

People don’t realize there is an element of ethnic prejudice here. The Uighurs are not Han Chinese some anthropologists say they are a Turkic people. The Hans historically have had complete disdain for them. Just like the Tibetan people are not Han, the Hans treat them like dirt too. As well as ethnic Mongols in China. China has ethnic problems. The media, since they write and present at about the the 4th grade level of literacy and historical awareness never cover this. If they tried their news bureaus would probably be kicked out of China.

The Han Chinese feel they are the true civilized people in China have from the beginning and still do today. See list of ethinic groups in China.

"China has detained more than a million Uighurs over the past few years in what the state defines as "re-education camps"."

What about the millions of white Americans we're sending to reeducation camps like these?

What China is doing makes a hell of a lot more sense than what we're doing. They're trying to protect their culture, whereas we are blowing ours up.

There is no genocide. This is the same movie we’ve seen before about everyone the NeoCons seek to destroy. Millions are already dead from their antics.

Just deport them to the Islamic hellhole of their choice. No need to intern, torture or kill them.

On 9/12/2001 deportation of all non-citizen Muslims and surveillance of all citizen Muslims should have been started. They are quietly building up their numbers.
