Totally agree, LA has no right to that land. abuse of eminent domain is rampant in this country.

There is no denying that at one time in this country black people were treated like crap.

I wonder if the Democrats will give back all the land taken from the Japanese-Americans while they were in the camps?

My father’s family lost their farm, possessions, and German shepherd in Marysville CA in 1942 due to internment. The only thing that got back was the dog and 10 cents on the dollar in 1948.

My mother’s family lost their farming land in Compton CA (not sure if they owned or leased it). The government also seized my grandparents’ bank accounts and didn’t return it until 1976, without interest.

And my maternal grandfather was arrested by the FBI in December 1941 and held in North Dakota for a year but never charged with a crime. The FBI must have found out that someone who could barely read or write in either Japanese or English don’t make good spies. He never asked for compensation.

My great grandfather lost a beautiful house, an apartment building, his factories, and all of his saved money to the invading soviet communists win 1945. He died the year I was born, 1951. His son (my grandfather) and my dad worked to get compensation, but never got a dime.

‘They didn’t want his type’. You know this how?

He was paid 14 K
He paid 1k

They were compensated for the value at the time.

Maybe it’s time to make a public point. If not just for your family, but to bring intentions to light.

Use the Nazi reparations to Jews as a benchmark. If you don’t have close living relatives and documentation, no one gets anything.

“Wait till they get the property tax bill for a $72 million piece of property....they’ll be giving it back....LOL”

exactly. The county wants some money and someone to pay that money. If they retain it, there is no money.

The family built a seaside resort catering to blacks. You can be sure they didn’t want their type around.

My grandmother accepted a very small sum as compensation. Her reasoning was that the newly-freed nation couldn't afford to compensate her properly and she didn't want to burden it with trying to fix the past. Those who had committed the offense weren't there to pay for it and she didn't want it coming out of the pockets of her fellow citizens who had also lived under communism. She took the small compensation and divided it among her grandchildren, so on paper I have been 'made whole', but of course it is mostly symbolic.

None of our family died in WWII combat, Nazi occupation or under communist occupation. There were some close calls, and much was lost. The fact that people lived to tell about it was enough for her, and it will have to be enough for me as well. We can only spend so much of our lives fighting the battles of the past.

“They were compensated for the value at the time.”

What documentation have you seen that would indicate that the government compensated the family for the actual value of the property?

How powerful and absolute would you like the government’s power to seize private property to be via eminent domain?

She bought it for 1200 dollars and was paid 14,000 for it.

It appears they bought the two empty lots in an undeveloped location for $1200, and 12 years later were paid $14,000 for the land and a lodge, café, dance hall and dressing tents with bathing suits for rent, where they operated a business in a growing area.

That makes the comparison rather more complicated than 1.2k vs 14k.

Until this settlement this was still owned by the city, which has only a life-guard training building and parking on the lots - which makes it more reasonable to undo the act.

Nope

Eminent domain allowed govt to take the land. they declare it condemned and just take it.

eminent domain usually requires a third party appraisal

well, in this case thry did offer compensation, but in many cases, the compensation is less than fair market value, and often if you dont accept their lowball amount, then they declare it condemned and take it over. we made a good faith offer but they rejected it.

This has nothing to do with race...if the government Illegitimately takes any person’s property, they should sue and obtain the same compensation.

This was 100 years ago. They paid 1 k. They received 14k

While I think imminent domain sucks, my point is that they were already paid.
