Charles and Willa Bruce moved to California from New Mexico with son Harvey.
In 1912 they bought land on Manhattan Beach and opened a resort .
The resort was one of the first to welcome African Americans to the coast.
In 1924 city officials seized two dozen properties through eminent domain.
Bruces fought in court, lost, and left the area: the proposed park was never built.

Were they not compensated at the time?
Eminent domain has been used in abusive and unjust manners against property owners. This case might make overreacting governments think twice before seizing land via eminent domain.
Too bad too late for the original family member ran off their land.
You can bet your bippy they were.
If they didnt take the compensation and buy more land then they have no ody to blame but themselves.
At first glance tbis stinks like corrupt judges.
The government did not follow through with their stated purpose of seizing the land via eminent domain.

Wait till they get the property tax bill for a $72 million piece of property....they’ll be giving it back....LOL
They did get compensated, but the government did not utilize the land for the public good in the manner that they had originally stated.
that I am cool with.
It doesnt matter.
They were paid $12,500, which might have been fine for the lots, but they had built a lodge, cafĂ©, and dance hall. They stole his land, livelihood and life’s work because they didn’t want his type around. And it worked. Manhattan Beach is 0.5% black.
The lot is still owned by the City, so giving it back to the family will be easy.
better not, my title abstract goes back to when the house was built in 1850 and the Seneca had already moved by then...
I wouldn’t mind getting back my share of the property the communists expropriated from my grandfather. There’s an apartment complex and cinema on what used to be his home and business. Alas. So are the ways of the world. I guess there’s some descendant of the Habsburgs who would also lay claim to it, and many more before then.
