They should pay back what they received for the land, plus interest and inflation.

$14,500 in 1912, when gold was $20/oz, was 725 oz gold, would at today’s price of $1762/oz be about $1.3m

“In 1912 they bought land on Manhattan Beach and opened a resort .

The resort was one of the first to welcome African Americans to the coast.

In 1924 city officials seized two dozen properties through eminent domain.

Bruces fought in court, lost, and left the area: the proposed park was never built.”

In 1912 they bought land and opened a resort. In 1924 they left and the resort was never built. ?? Wut?

FReepers trying to justify the governments position need to examine their heads.
Eminent domain has been abused by our “benevolent” governments around our nation for too long.
Stealing private property should be one of the very hardest things our government can do to people.
I am glad to hear these people will be getting compensated for this theft.

“This was 100 years ago. They paid 1 k. They received 14k”

How are you so sure that the family was paid the actual value of the land?

Bruces fought in court, lost, and left the area: the proposed park was never built.

See Kelo v City of New London.

Apparently cities can take land and then waste it.

The government did not follow through with their stated purpose of seizing the land via eminent domain.

See Kelo v City of New London. The Supreme court ruled that the city could take the land. The land has set unused ever since New London took it.

I’m over it and I don’t give a crap when it happened. If anyone can get repaid for government tyranny inflicted on their family; I’m good with that.

Just to be clear, I am limiting my response to eminent domain. Not any crap like reparations.
