Fresh lockdowns and curfews were imposed on tens of millions of people from India to Argentina on Saturday, as Covid-19 infections surged again and vaccine roll-outs were hampered by shortages and scares over side effects.
In India, the worst-hit state of Maharashtra was running out of vaccines as the health system buckled under the weight of the contagion, which has killed 2.9 million people worldwide.
Having let its guard down with mass religious festivals, political rallies and spectators at cricket matches, the world's second-most populous nation has added more than a million new infections since late March.
Every weekend from Saturday until the end of April, Maharashtra's 125 million people will be confined to their homes unless travelling or shopping for food or medicine.
"I'm not for the lockdown at all but I don't think the government has any other choice," media professional Neha Tyagi, 27, told AFP in Maharashtra's megacity Mumbai.
"This lockdown could have been totally avoided if people would take the virus seriously."
The crisis is being exacerbated by a shortage of vaccines.
India has so far inoculated 94 million of its 1.3 billion people, but The Times of India reported Friday that states on average had just over five days of stock left, citing health ministry data, with some regions already grappling with severe shortages.
Stay-at-home orders were also set to come into force for the eight million inhabitants of Bogota, as the Colombian capital battled a third wave of infections, adding to curfews already covering seven million across four other major cities.
Elsewhere in South America, Argentina entered a night-time curfew Friday running from midnight to 06:00 am every day until April 30.

Everyone I know who’s over 30 and wants to get the vaccine has already had at least the first dose. I’ve got family in MI - a state that is apparently a disaster when it comes to vaccine rollout - and even they have all had at least their first dose.
It sure seems that the Trump vaccine plan that the media said didn’t exist did in fact exist and relative the rest of the world, was the gold standard for vaccine plans.

But American states that had no such mandates have fared well. Why is that?
India has 5 days of vaccine stock left, according to the article. Does that mean there will be no vaccines available in 5 days, or that the next shipment is on the way? My local Wal-Mart only has milk available through a freshness date, but 7 days from now they will have the same amount of milk available as today, with different freshness dates.

I’ll bet if some street thug put a gun to your face and told you to say your prayers because he was going to kill you, you’d say “Bull-F@cking-S#it!!!”. Maybe that’s just some quirk of human nature-denial. I see things the other way though-I assume this virus will eventually kill us all, that this is it for humanity. Call me the tenth man I guess.

We had no plan other than warp speed.
I had my first dose of Pfizer a few weeks ago. Now knowing it is 80% effective on ONE dose, I am hard pressed to ‘risk’ the side effects of the second dose.
In fact, I think the second dose schedule is too soon and may indeed be why some folks have such severe reactions. And those that are passing away after the second dose may not have even been healthy enough to have the shot in the first place.
This vaccine is hard on the body and not just the immune system. There’s a lot they either don’t know or won’t tell us in regards to all this from what Covid really is to these shots.
