Wasn't this originally proposed after 9/11/2001? Twenty one and a half years now with the May 3, 2023 date? The RealID will be old enough to prove its own age to buy a drink.

I needed a couple extra pieces of ID when I got the Real ID version of my driver's license a couple years ago. This isn't that difficult of program, but there is nothing the government can't screw up.

Yes, this real ID requirement was conceived as a result of 9.11.

I never understood the need for it, because as foreign nationals, Mohammed Atta and his boys would not have needed an American driver’s license as an ID. They would have had their passports from their home country.

And anyway, as I recall, we weren’t required to show an ID to get on a plane until 1996. I don’t recall the justification used for that new requirement.

Anyway, isn’t it stunning that it takes decades to implement something which was recommended as a result of Sept 11 2001??? We won World War 2 in less than four years after Pearl Harbor.

It isn’t? Try being adopted 75 years ago in a state that can’t find the birth certificate issued after the adoption name change in addition to being divorced and remarried.
