The common link here is having some assets. If you don’t have anything to steal, they leave you alone.
One of our potential heirs has this thought/concept, “A sign of a well managed life leaves no debts and no real money.” The exception might be some moneyed gifts to grand kids.
Then, will what is left to a couple of your favorite charities. IRAs are good in how you can notify them how to distribute what is left.
We have lived the legal guardian nightmare with our daughter, and know full well the horrors of the system. We have since resolved the issue but not without court battles, perseverance, and the help of my Republican State Senator. Our involvement in the system came as the result of a TBI from an auto accident, but the methods are much the same as the elder abuse side. The disabled are just as vulnerable.
There is a good movie on Netflix called “I Care a Lot” that captures the essence of the system. I won’t give any spoilers but, I have to say it was slightly uneven, but if it wasn’t I might have had a stroke before I finished it, thats how angry it made me. I had to pause it a few times as it was to calm down.
She doesn’t have any relatives close enough, she has been under state guardianship eight years. She has been to court several times.
What it also tells me is stay away from predatory lawyers who can exponentially increase the financial abuse by churning fees for themselves
