“”It seems you eagerly favor greater taxation. OKKKAAAAAAY then. Carry on.””
And you would rather somebody else foot a bill you’re responsible for. Nothing like getting a free ride! Oh wait a minute it’s not free, somebody else is paying for it.
On a side note, I understand it is not against the law to ride a bicycle on the freeways/interstates in Colorado. I can only surmise it’s because of the topography.
40,000 people a year die in auto collisions, including the cyclists and pedestrians that motorists kill.
Bicycles weigh about 1/40th as much, and go about 1/3 as fast, so therefore they kill and maim a lot fewer innocents.
I don’t think liability insurance is crucial for cyclists, though I admit in urban settings there are some true lunatics who need to be re-educated.
"...nothing like getting a free ride..."
Yikes. RIP.
Most of the FM’s around Wichita Falls have 6 foot shoulders and bikes ride on these shoulders.
If someone can’t keep off the shoulder when passing bikes, they are a terrible driver.
I’ve been an enthusiastic rider of both bicycles and motorcycles. I always felt much safer on my Harley than I did on the bike. On a motorcycle, you’re out in the traffic lane going the same speed as everybody else. Clueless idiots can still kill you, but you have a fighting chance. You’re helpless on a bicycle.
“”Do you ever walk along the side of the road after dinner on a warm summer night? It is fun, you should try it one evening in your neighborhood.””
My neighborhood is a 32 square mile ranch.
“”DUSTY ROAD loves taxes.””
No Dusty Road dislikes and is tired of paying for free loading gimme pig’s. Keep it up Porky, you’re doing more damage to the cause than I could possibly do.
"...you're doing more damage to the cause..."
Thank you Blue Jays for the PING,
A very tragic happening,
RIP!
I have some good friends who still ride local country roads. I think they've forgotten how dangerous it is.
Drivers are often on the phone, reading texts, or otherwise occupied.
I read that book also. According to the author, it's one in twenty-five, not one in ten. Your point remains valid, however.
The reactions by many of the people on the thread are every bit as scary to me as cycling on the roads around here. There are maybe 1/10th of the cyclists that there once were on the road where we live. We still have neighbors griping about how much they are inconvenienced when they have to pass a cyclist while driving their F-450 4x4 duely diesel 20 mph above the speed limit on the windy country road below our house. I haven't seen a cyclist holding up traffic in years where we live. People have zero patience for anything anymore and it is kind of sickening. They should be ashamed of themselves. It is just one more sign of a society in extreme decline.
Not that I am completely immune to feeling irritated by someone holding up traffic... yesterday, I was stuck behind some a$%$hat for miles as some old man blabbered on his cell phone driving 10 mph below the speed limit. This is a road that is easy to pass a cyclist on but difficult and illegal to pass another vehicle. You hardly ever see a cyclist but slow driving distracted drivers are an every day occurrence. Hey morons, those are the people inconveniencing you and some of them are the ones complaining on this thread.
I am very sorry about your dad and hopes he makes a quicker than expected recovery. Thank you for the great post. I have cycled at least 80,000 miles on the road during my life and was a state, and regional champion many years ago. I have always done everything possible to not inconvenience anyone in a car or truck yet I have frequently been treated very rudely, attacked by dogs and intentionally run off the road. These days we pick our routes very carefully and ride on a bike path when possible to avoid as many hazards as possible.
The comments have been awful, stupid, and just plain scary. It is no wonder the politicians were able to get away with unbelievable crap using Covid as an excuse. We have people clamoring to have other's rights taken away if they perceive that they have ever been inconvenienced in any way at all. Yet when it comes to an activity they participate in it is a completely different story.
We have thread after thread on this forum from people who identify themselves as conservatives who want to have marijuana legalized in every state. We live in one of the first states to have done this, Washington. Virtually every time we get out on the road these days we can smell pot being smoked coming from cars ahead of us. Sometimes the skunk like smell completely permeates the car and makes it very unpleasant. It has become a real problem and there is basically nothing that the police are able to do about it the way that the law is currently written... not that marijuana laws were ever vigorously enforced in this state any way.
I've paid a lot less than that for some motorcycles. Why am I paying registration, taxes, insurance, to ride on the road, yet bicyclist are not?
"...Why am I paying registration, taxes, insurance, to ride on the road, yet bicyclists are not?..."
You completely evaded my questions.
