An elected Virginia sheriff is quitting the Democratic party, citing its “relentless attack on law enforcement.”
Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler, who has been twice elected as a Democrat, said he filed Monday to join the GOP — which his application unanimously accepted by the party, according to WJHL-TV.
“I am changing to the Republican Party because of the relentless attack on law enforcement by Democrats in Richmond and Washington,” Shuler said in a press release.
“My deputies work hard to serve and protect the citizens of Smyth County,” he said. “As sheriff, it has been difficult to watch my deputies try to move forward during this unprecedented assault on our profession.”
“We remain an honorable profession and should not be judged by the bad acts of a few,” Shuler added. “I have always been conservative throughout my law enforcement career of 38 years.”

Shuler is the third sheriff in Southwest Virginia to respond by leaving the Democratic party — Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt and Buchanan County Sheriff John McClanahan dumped the party last year, WJHL said.
A little too slow for my tastes. This should have happened nation-wide six years ago.

Good news, bad news. It’s nice to see them come over, but what baggage are they bringing with them? Are they still for government unions, pro-abortion, anti-oil, etc.
The Repubs should be able to reject dumb-asses. We got enough already.

I understand how you feel. I cast my first presidential ballot for Richard Milhous Nixon in 1972. I have never been a Democrat. I’m 73 years old.
There were a few times that in a local election that I voted for a Democrat candidate.
My ancestors were all Democrats, but the were fiscal conservatives and were clinging to traditions that followed the Civil War. (I don’t want into an argument about what happened then, it is divisive and pointless)
I’ve held public office, on the local level. And I was once Republican County Chairman in a county in Western New Mexico.
I am not a politician. Don’t want to be.
It is clear to me that we have extreme danger related to the survival of our nation.
I will protect her, whatever it takes. Period.
I don’t know the man. He said he was always conservative. It will be up to the local voters to decide. Not me.
Don’t know where you live in Oregon. I know the ComDems totally control the major cities. Also that 1/3 of the state would be glad to attach itself to another state.
