I have been to GTMO four times, three during the current conflict. Different leaders have been claiming they were going to close GTMO for many decades, not just concerning the current conflict.

The base is too valuable for sensors and for the Coast Guard. It gives us a foothold and launching base for a plethora of missions and capabilities and we would be greatly reduced without it.

The prison is temporary, the mission is permanent.

We better hope Cuba remains Communist forever. Otherwise, we would be obligated to return GTMO when Cuba becomes a functioning country that represents their people.
