To: RBW in PA
I look at it the other way around. Most Americans don’t have a clue about the historical significance of these observances, and the holidays have become little more than a day off for shopping and sales. So perhaps we should just eliminate the holidays, make government workers show up for work every day, and let people who find the days meaningful observe them.

Over the years I’ve found myself working more on civil holidays anyway — and taking the religious ones off.

Interesting point. Eliminate official Holidays. Let the people celebrate or not as they wish. If it meams that much then take your own time off from work. If people are bothering to work at all that is.
