Paychecks Cancelled: After Stopping TX Election Integrity Bill, Dem Lawmakers Learn Gov. Abbott Just Vetoed Their Salaries

Want to stop governing in order to stop a bill? In Texas, that’ll stop you from getting paid.

On Friday, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed funding for the Texas Legislature after the state House Democratic caucus walked out to avoid a vote on an election integrity bill late last month. The move, first reported by the Texas Tribune, would pause all funding for the legislature, its staffers and its agencies.

Abbott said in a statement that “funding should not be provided for those who quit their job early, leaving their state with unfinished business and exposing taxpayers to higher costs for an additional legislative session.”

“I therefore object to and disapprove of these appropriations.”

And that’s the thing — while the Democrats’ walkout may have temporarily stalled the bill, which would have ended 24-hour drive-in voting and temporary outdoor polling places, inter alia, it’ll be added to a special legislative session later this year, along with bail reform legislation championed by Abbott and the GOP.

Did Abbott get a new wheel chair? He’s really been on a roll lately.

Or maybe because the 2022 election is only a year and a half away.

LOL I was gonna say there are Abbott haters on FR, but the pro-gun law he passed, is just hard to beat. I think he’s running for Prez in 24’ because he’s matching DeSantis in FL with exceptional laws in his state too.

Dems are whining that the staff won’t get paid, but if you read the bill, the new budget doesn’t take effect until September 1. That means everyone will continue to get paid up until that date. In the meantime, a special session will be called, and this veto will force the Dems to show up, the voting rights bill will be passed, the veto will be fixed, and everyone will get paid.

The only thing he has been inconsistent about was the COVID stuff. And, I would argue he took sort of a middle ground there. I think he could have, and should have stood up to the county judges a bit more, but he could have been a lot worse.

I don’t hate him. Just have not been happy about the mandate garbage, shutting down the state. He’s making amends. He’s been governor since 2015. He’s had plenty of time to pass pro gun laws. It’s Texas for crying out loud. We should have been constitutional carry for a long time.

I’d vote DeSantis for President before I’d vote Abbott.

I find this comment, unkind, undeserved , abhorrent and offensive, contrary to Free Republics posting guidelines, prejudicial against the physically impaired.

We have many battle injured military veterans who post here who are wheel chair bound.

The owner and operator of Free Republic, Jim Robinson, is wheel chair bound.

Therefore your comment is not only uncivil, it is triply uncivil.

You owe a lot of people an apology.

That’s my understanding too. Where Abbott-haters get off saying it’s just political posturing is ludicrous in itself.

This Governor has been conservative across the board for years yet his detractors whine about his mask policy as if that’s the only thing that matters.

As soon as the mask data were in, this Governor stepped in to demask Texas. If he had done it too soon, the rotten CDC data could have struck a blow against Abbott’s base blaming them for a surge in new cases etc.

The Abbott detractors should be directing their uncontrolled shots at the CDC but they’re probably too ignorant to do that or they’re dogs for Karl Rove.
