What law exactly did they break? Being in public with a gun?

Yes, Massachusetts takes the position that their very strict firearms law apply to anyone, even someone just traveling across the state. So they regularly arrest motorists in possession of firearms that would be legal in other states.

But isn’t I-95 an Interstate, built with Federal Dollars?
Should be perfectly fine to transport your firearms.

An enterprising Legal Beagle should take this one.
