From Russian expats that I have had dealings with,I can understand at a simple level "The Mother Russia" complex derived from history that drives Russian imperial ambitions.

From Ukrainian expats I glean that corruption and the ever constant search for the "vig" permeates the political culture in Kyiv.

Except for the Baltic and Slavic nations in Nato, I would be tempted to say let Kyiv and Moscow have at it. The only certainty I have is that Biden and Blinken are not up to managing the impending crisis.

I proposed a sort of “Velvet Divorce” not unlike what happened to Czechoslovakia, where the more Russian areas of Ukraine would be free to join Russia.
